As the site of a PGA Tour event (the Buick Invitational), Torrey Pines is a familiar place to many of the players in the Open field. But that’s where the similarities end, because Torrey Pines in June is completely different from Torrey Pines in January, when the Buick is played.

(June 11, 2008) - Charlie Sifford, the first African-American to play the PGA Tour and the first black golfer to be enshrined at the World Golf Hall of Fame, will be recognized for his pioneering career achievements by the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association at their 57th National Awards Dinner on Monday, June 23, 2008 at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, New York. Sifford will receive the Gold Tee Award, the MGWA’s highest honor.

Editor’s note: Michael Quagliano, 21, of Ardsley, N.Y., is one of eight amateurs competing in the 108th U.S. Open Championship at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, California. Quagliano is the captain of the golf team at Duke University in Durham, N.C., and has several local victories to his credit, including the 2003 Met Junior and 2002 MGA/MetLife Boys Championship, as well as the 2007 Westchester Amateur.
