Torrey Pines Ready for Prime Time

It’s U.S. Open week, and as is the case every year, there is a lot of buzz about how tough the course is going to play. As the site of a PGA Tour event (the Buick Invitational), Torrey Pines is a familiar place to many of the players in the Open field. But that’s where the similarities end, because Torrey Pines in June is completely different from Torrey Pines in January, when the Buick is played.

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (June 11, 2008) - Charlie Sifford, the first African-American to play the PGA Tour and the first black golfer to be enshrined at the World Golf Hall of Fame, will be recognized for his pioneering career achievements by the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association at their 57th National Awards Dinner on Monday, June 23, 2008 at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, New York. Sifford will receive the Gold Tee Award, the MGWA’s highest honor.

LAWRENCE, N.Y. (June 9, 2008) – The Sterling Farms team of Frank Hendricks and Tom Yates captured the 16th MGA Senior Net Four-Ball Tournament title on Monday, June 9 at Lawrence Village Country Club in Lawrence, N.Y.
Editor’s note: Michael Quagliano, 21, of Ardsley, N.Y., is one of eight amateurs competing in the 108th U.S. Open Championship at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, California. Quagliano is the captain of the golf team at Duke University in Durham, N.C., and has several local victories to his credit, including the 2003 Met Junior and 2002 MGA/MetLife Boys Championship, as well as the 2007 Westchester Amateur.
ELMSFORD, N.Y. (June 5, 2008) – The 2008 MGA season continues on Monday, June 9 with the rescheduled 16th MGA Senior Net Four-Ball Tournament at Lawrence Village Country Club in Lawrence, N.Y. The event, originally scheduled for May 12, was moved to June 9 due to heavy rains and wet course conditions.
