ELMSFORD, N.Y. (February 26, 2009) - The MGA Foundation’s 2009 Spring Educational Forums series is well underway. These programs feature presentations by industry experts that are designed to educate club leaders and the golfing public about a wide range of topics of interest including the Rules of Golf, handicapping procedures and new technology.
More than 100 managers, superintendents, golf professionals and other club officials gathered at Wheatley Hills Golf Club in East Williston, N.Y., on March 18th for a symposium convened by the Metropolitan Club Managers Association (MCMA) entitled “The State of the Club Environment, Round 2.” Guest panelists included Jay Mottola and Charlie Robson, executive directors of the Metropolitan Golf Association and Met PGA, respectively; Richard Spear, the superintendent at the Piping Rock Club on Long Island; Ran
Gene Westmoreland will be at the helm as the non-playing captain of the six-man amateur team representing the Metropolitan Golf Association at the 8th Governor Hugh L. Carey Challenge Cup, a Walker Cup-style competition against the Golfing Union of Ireland.
Since its inception in 1994, the MGA Foundation’s GOLFWORKS Student Intern Program has impacted the lives of more than 1,600 young men and women across the Met Area. Founded as a true intern program, GOLFWORKS is designed to give interns exposure to all areas of club business — clubhouse, maintenance and golf operations — during a ten-week, paid summer internship.

The top senior players in the Met Area will visit Preakness Hills Country Club in Wayne, N.J., for the 81st playing of the MGA Senior Amateur Championship on May 4 and 5. The Willie Tucker-designed golf course promises to provide a tough test for the field and will add another chapter to its already storied history.

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (April 3, 2008) - Charlie Sifford, the first African-American to play the PGA Tour and the first black golfer to be enshrined at the World Golf Hall of Fame, will be recognized for his pioneering career achievements by the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association at their 57th National Awards Dinner on Monday, June 23, 2008 at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, New York. Sifford will receive the Gold Tee Award, the MGWA’s highest honor.
EAST WILLISTON, N.Y. (March 27, 2008) - The Metropolitan Golf Association Foundation is pleased to announce Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y., as the recipient of the second annual MGA Club Environmental Award. The award honors an MGA member club that has demonstrated environmental stewardship through golf course maintenance, construction, education and research.
