Elmsford, N.Y.-The 2003 MGA Presidents Council was held at the Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, NJ on Tuesday, October 14th.  The Presidents Council is an annual meeting of the Presidents and Managers of private MGA Member clubs, to discuss topics of mutual interest to club leaders.  It is the Metropolitan Golf Foundation’s largest and most important educational program.

WILMINGTON, DEL. – A former professional on the PGA European Tour and PGA Tour, forty-four-year-old Bryan Norton of Mission Hills, Kan., dispatched defending champion George Zahringer, 50, of New York, N.Y., 3 and 1. Earlier in the day, Norton came back to defeat 35-year-old Pat Carter of Lesage, Va., in 19 holes.

Never was there a clearer example than what occurred on the 18th hole of the match between defending champion George Zahringer, 50, of New York, N.Y., and Rick Reinsberg, 31, of Lafayette, Calif.

WILMINGTON, DEL. – Two former Mid-Amateur champions moved into the quarterfinal round of the championship Tuesday at Wilmington Country Club, while another player fell short in making a surge toward the title in memory of his late father.

 

Defending champion George Zahringer, 50, of New York, N.Y., and 44-year-old Jerry Courville (1995 winner) of Milford, Conn., were models of efficiency in their third-round matches, capping a day in which the second and third rounds were played on the 6,978-yard par 71 South Course.

WILMINGTON, DE.-Two Met Area legends, George Zahringer of Deepdale and Jerry Courville, Jr. of Shorehaven advanced to the quarterfinal round of match play at the 23rd U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at Wilmington Country Club, Wilmington, DE.  The finalists from last year’s Championship both advanced with hard-fought victories in the first, second, and third rounds.

The Metropolitan Golf Association has announced the members of their eight-man amateur team which will compete against a similar team from the Golfing Union of Ireland in the 5th Governor Hugh L. Carey Challenge Cup Matches at the Quaker Ridge Golf Club in Scarsdale, NY on October  7-8.  The Carey Cup Matches are named for former New York State Governor Hugh L.

Connecticut Men's and New York Women's Teams Finish Strong in the 5th USGA State Team Championship

ELMSFORD, N.Y.-Jerry Courville Jr. of Milford, CT fired a three round total of one-under par 209 (70 – 71 – 68), to finish t-4th and lead his Connecticut team to a 6th place finish in the 5th USGA Men’s State Team Championship at Charles River Country Club in Newton Centre, Mass.  Courville was joined by teammates Jeff Hedden of Quaker Hill and Justin Goodhue of Glastonbury.  The best two rounds out of the three were counted for each of the three days giving the Connecticut team a total of four-over par 424 (136 – 141 – 144).
