The Metropolitan Golf Association will present its 2004 Distinguished Service Award to former MGA President John C. Baldwin of The Meadow Brook Club.  The award will be given at the Association’s 107th Annual Meeting and Dinner at Westchester CC on Wednesday, December 1st.

St. Augustine, F.L.--Former Met Open and Met Amateur champion Jim McGovern (left) of Hackensack, NJ, fired a final round 66 to finish in 2nd place and earn a coveted spot in the Final Stage of Qualifying School at the Black Horse Golf Club in Seaside, CA. Met Amateur Champion Andrew Svoboda, despite a valiant effort, could not overcome his first round 78 and finished tied for 51st at the St Johns Country Club in St. Augustine, FL.

Rio Rico, AZ… When players talk about the pressures of “Q School” they are referring to what three of the Met Area’s talented young professionals experienced during the school’s first stage. Tyler Hall of Wayne, NJ, Brian Lamberti of Granite Springs, NY and former GlenArbor Head Professional Rob Labritz each played extremely well only to watch their dreams of competing on the PGA Tour fall just one shot short. Despite shooting 68-68 on the weekend Lamberti’s three-under- par, 277 was just shy of the cut number in the event held at Florence CC in Florence, SC.

WMGA/MGA Tie Ligue de Paris in The 12th French American Challenge

Edison, NJ-For only the second time in the twelve playings of this unique international event, the MGA and WMGA team tied the powerful Ligue de Paris team finishing at ten points apiece after two days of fourball, foursome and singles play at Plainfield Country Club in Plainfield, NJ.  The only other tie in this event came in 1995 at The Creek and like then, the Ligue de Paris will retain the cup as defending champions. The event was sponsored by world-renowned watchmakers Baume & Mercier.

The Metropolitan Golf Association and Women’s Metropolitan Golf Association have announced the six men and four women selected to represent the Met Area in the 13th French American Challenge scheduled for October 20-21 at the Plainfield Country Club in Plainfield NJ.  The event is presented by luxury watchmaker Baume & Mercier.

Vannelli Captures Medalist Honors, Wins First Match at U.S. Senior Am

Los Angeles, CA. - Ronald Vannelli, 56, of Edison, N.J., recorded a 36-hole total 4-over-par 144 to earn medalist honors by a stroke at the 2004 USGA Senior Amateur Championship, being conducted at the par-70, 6,491-yard Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles. Vannelli, also advanced to the round of 64 with a 1-up victory over Larry Walsh of Buda, TX. Former MGA President John Baldwin qualified for match play with rounds of 75 – 76=151 but was defeated in his first match by Tony Lehman of Sacramento, CA 6 and 5.

Sea Island, GA.-Roger Hoit of Baltusrol Golf Club pulled off an amazing come from behind victory in his second round match against Bryan Norton of Mission Hills, KS. After rallying from 5 down after five holes to win with a birdie on the first extra hole. In addition, Mark Thompson of Plandome won his second round match against Larry Tedesco of Cumming, GA after matching birdies on the difficult par 4, 18th hole to earn a 1- up victory and secure a spot in tomorrow’s round of 16.
