St. Augustine, F.L.--Former Met Open and Met Amateur champion Jim McGovern (left) of Hackensack, NJ, fired a final round 66 to finish in 2nd place and earn a coveted spot in the Final Stage of Qualifying School at the Black Horse Golf Club in Seaside, CA. Met Amateur Champion Andrew Svoboda, despite a valiant effort, could not overcome his first round 78 and finished tied for 51st at the St Johns Country Club in St. Augustine, FL.

Rio Rico, AZ… When players talk about the pressures of “Q School” they are referring to what three of the Met Area’s talented young professionals experienced during the school’s first stage. Tyler Hall of Wayne, NJ, Brian Lamberti of Granite Springs, NY and former GlenArbor Head Professional Rob Labritz each played extremely well only to watch their dreams of competing on the PGA Tour fall just one shot short. Despite shooting 68-68 on the weekend Lamberti’s three-under- par, 277 was just shy of the cut number in the event held at Florence CC in Florence, SC.

GREENWICH, Conn. – George J. Zahringer III, 49, of New York, N.Y., edged closer to a rematch of last year’s final by advancing to the semifinals at the 2002 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship following a 3 and 1 victory over fellow Met Area competitor Austin Eaton, 33, of Stamford, Conn., in this morning’s quarterfinal round. Zahringer’s semifinal opponent will be Jeff Wilson, 39, of Suisin, Calif., who edged Terrence Miskell, 35, of New Braunfels, Texas, in 19 holes.

A three-hole aggregate playoff was needed to decide the tournaments fourth edition after Miller finished tied with Baltusrol head professional Doug Steffen at five-over-par 145 after 36-holes.

The 35-year old head professional at Wheatley Hills Golf Club on Long Island compiled a six-under par 54 hole total of 207 (70-70-67) to edge out two-time Walker Cup team member Jerry Courville Jr. of Shorehaven.
