Locust Valley, N.Y. (September 30, 2009) – Long Island police officer Dennis Lynch of Nassau Players Club shot an even-par 70, the best round of anyone in the field over two days, to surge to a three-stroke victory in the 3rd MGA Mid-Amateur Championship at the Creek in Locust, Valley, N.Y.
September 29, 2009 – On a cool and breezy autumn day, Irish native and New Jersey resident Niall Handley of High Bridge Hills (N.J.) shot a one-over-par 71 and shares the first-round lead in the 3rd MGA Mid-Amateur Championship with Chuck Del Priore of Wykagyl.
September 25, 2009 – 2007 Met Open champion Frank Bensel of Century, and 2006 & 2007 NJPGA Player of the Year Frank Esposito of Brooklake, each won their respective PGA section championships this month.
September 24, 2009 – Craig Thomas, head professional at Metropolis Country Club in White Plains, N.Y., played a key role in the United States team’s resounding 17½ to 8½ victory over Great Britain & Ireland in the 2009 PGA Cup in Loch Lomund, Scotland.
September 25, 2009 – The New Jersey team of Michael Stamberger, Thomas Gramigna and Michael Deo finished tied for 16th place at the USGA Men’s State Team Championship. Stamberger, the 2003 Met Amateur champion, finished with a three-round total of 223.
As the golf season begins to wind down for most Met Area golfers, a number of local professionals hope to be at the peak of their games this fall as Tour qualifying schools are held in the U.S. and Europe. These players are looking to achieve one of the most difficult and mentally demanding feats in sports: earning a spot on one of the top tours.
September 22, 2009 - Defending champion Greg Rohlf of Winged Foot leads an outstanding field of 35-and-older amateurs in the 3rd MGA Mid-Amateur Championship, to be held September 29 and 30 at The Creek Club in Locust Valley, N.Y.
September 22, 2009 – It looks like it will be a photo finish in the race for the 2009 MGA Jerry Courville Sr.
September 18, 2009 – Jim Tingley, a longtime committeeman for both the MGA and LIGA and past member of the MGA Executive Committee passed away on September 16, he was 90. Tingley, who was a 52-year member of Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove, N.Y., loved the game of golf and everything that went along with it. He was a five-time club champion at Nassau and more impressively, was the owner of 20 holes-in-one during his decades-long involvement with the game.
