New Jersey Finishes Tied for 16th at USGA Men's State Team
September 25, 2009 – The New Jersey team of Michael Stamberger, Thomas Gramigna and Michael Deo finished tied for 16th place at the USGA Men’s State Team Championship. Stamberger, the 2003 Met Amateur champion, finished with a three-round total of 223. Deo, the 2009 NJSGA Amateur champion, also shot 223, while Gramigna came in at 218. Stamberger will be competing next week in the MGA Mid-Am at the Creek.
The team representing Pennsylvania, with 2009 U.S. Walker Cup team member Nathan Smith, won the event. The team from New York missed the cut.

Update: Cut Made at USGA Men’s State Team
September 25, 2009 – In an unprecedented move that has never been implemented in the USGA Men’s State Team competition, a 36-hole cut was enforced due to the threat of inclement weather, ending the competition for half of the field. In total, 25 teams were knocked out of the competition, including John Ervasti and the team from New York. Michael Stamberger and the team from New Jersey made the cut and was tied for 12th as Friday’s final round action got underway. Stamberger shot 72-75 in his first two rounds while teammates Michael Deo and Thomas Gramigna shot 76-73 and 71-72, respectively. Ervasti shot rounds of 76-77, while fellow Met Area teammate Albert Rabil shot 79-87.

Ervasti, Stamberger Lead Locals in USGA Men’s State Team
September 22, 2009 – Prior to playing in next week’s MGA Mid Amateur, 2009 Met Amateur runner-up John Ervasti of Sleepy Hollow and 2003 Met Amateur champion Michael Stamberger of Spring Lake lead the teams from New York and New Jersey, respectively, at the 2009 USGA Men’s State Team Championship. The event, which is being played September 23-25 at the Country Club of St. Albans in St. Louis, Mo., is a biennial competition that features three-man teams from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
The other Met Area player joining Ervasti on the New York team is Albert Rabil of Whippoorwill. Fellow Garden Staters competing alongside Stamberger include 2009 New Jersey Amateur champion Michael Deo of High Bridge Hills and Thomas Gramigna of Pebble Creek.
The field of golfers will play 18 holes on each of three stroke-play rounds with the two lowest scores from each three-person team constitute the team score for each round. The three-day total is the team’s score for the championship.
The USGA Men’s State Team Championship, as well as the Women’s State Team Championship, grew out of the Association’s Centennial celebration in 1995. The championship was fashioned after the biennial World Amateur Team Championships. Since 2001, 52 teams — all fifty states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia — have participated.
