Randolph Leads Midway Through MGA Mid-Am
LINCOLNDALE, N.Y. (September 30, 2013) – Trevor Randolph of Arcola is taking his summer success and running with it into the autumn season. His 5-under 67 in absolute ideal conditions at the scenic Anglebrook Golf Club in Lincolndale, N.Y., was low enough to lead the talented field of 79 players aged 35 or over heading into the final round of the 7th MGA Mid-Amateur Championship.
The Wyckoff, N.J., resident, who finished as the runner-up in this year's Met Am and won the 2013 NJSGA Mid-Amateur, started the day with a bogey but tallied a clean card the rest of the way out, including six birdies.

“I three-putted the first hole, and that was my welcome to Anglebrook hole,” Randolph, 40, said. “I putted pretty well after that. I left a couple out there but for the most part my putting was really spot on.”
Nipping at Randolph’s heels is last year’s champion Mark Henderson of Saint Andrew’s. Henderson, who fired a record-breaking 64 in the final round to win the 2012 Mid-Am at the Meadow Brook Club, stormed out of the gates on Monday, getting it to 6-under through 12 holes. But a double bogey on the par 3 13th derailed his hopes of going really low.
“I played fairly consistent on the front. Hit a lot of greens, made a couple putts,” he said. “I hadn’t played too much in the last month or so. I wasn’t trying to get too much out of game, wasn’t trying to push it too hard.”
A total of 48 players made the cut of 80 (plus-8). Alan Specht of Wheatley Hills, Nick Desai of Baltusrol, and Matt Corrigan of Nassau Players all shot 1-under 71s and sit tied for third.
Two-time MGA Mid-Am champ Dennis Lynch of Nassau Players, Michael Karger of Century, Patrick Pierson of Minisceongo, and Tom Yellin of Stanwich are tied for sixth after even par 72s. Former MGA Senior Open and Senior Amateur champion John Ervasti of Sleepy Hollow rounds out the top 10 after a 1-over 73.
2011 champion Niall Handley of Essex Fells is T11 (74), while the first MGA Mid-Am winner Michael Reardon of Tuxedo sits T34 (78).
Hosting its first MGA championship, Anglebrook, the final design of renowned architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr., posed a stern test for the field of seasoned competitors. The classically designed course, which opened in May 1998, features quick, undulating greens and scenic landscapes. It played to a par 72 of 6,606 yards for the first round.
Live hole-by-hole scoring will be provided for the full field during the final 18-hole round, which begins on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. Full coverage, including photos, video, and results can be found on mgagolf.org.
