HANDICAP CLARIFICATION MEMORANDUM
MEMORANDUM
TO: CLUB OFFICIALS, MGA MEMBER CLUBS
FROM KEVIN KLINE, MANAGER, COURSE RATING & HANDICAPPING
SUBJECT: MGA HANDICAP CERTIFICATION
DATE: FEBRUARY 6, 2008
As you should be aware, several years ago the Metropolitan Golf Association, in conjunction with the United States Golf Association, embarked on a significant handicap education campaign. The primary objective of this program is to ensure that clubs and their members are thoroughly educated in the procedures and interpretations of the USGA Handicap System. The MGA has been pleased with the efforts its member clubs have made to become better educated in the USGA Handicap System and the Certification Program will again be a focus of ours in 2008.
The requirements of the Certification Program are simple: a representative (staff or club member) from each MGA member club MUST attend at least one USGA sanctioned seminar (run by either the USGA or MGA) per revision term. As of the end of the 2005-2007 term, all MGA member clubs have met the requirements of the Certification Program and will remain certified through 2011, provided they complete the handicap seminar and quiz requirement during the new revision term of January 1, 2008 – December 31, 2011. A list of certified clubs can be viewed on our Web site at www.mgagolf.org.
The MGA has long been recognized as a leader in providing member clubs with the best and most complete handicap service available anywhere. We feel this Certification Program is a necessary and worthwhile endeavor, especially as more and more new players are welcomed to the game of golf. Our Certification Program will help ensure that all of our clubs, and their members, continue to follow all aspects of the USGA Handicap System.
Listed below are the available MGA and USGA handicap seminars. If none of the dates and/or sites is convenient, we would be happy to come to your club and conduct a seminar for your members and/or staff. We look forward to working with you and, with your help, we can make the Met Area clubs and golfers “certified” experts in the USGA Handicap System. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at kkline@mgagolf.org or 914-347-4653.
