Casperkill Team Wins MGA/MetLife Women's Net Team Championship
MAMARONECK, N.Y. (October 4, 2012) – Thirty-one teams of women played under cloudy skies today at the 28th MGA/MetLife Women’s Net Team Championship at Hampshire Country Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y. Cathy Moon and Bea Prokop of Casperkill Golf Club dominated the field, carding a net score of 9-under 62 and earning them the title. The ladies faced a challenging course setup, but were able to play consistently through some rain to hold the low score.
Monica Riggs and Elaine Laux of Redding Country Club and Diane Schloesser and Mary Lou Assante of Rock Hill Women’s Golf Club all finished with net scores of 5-under 66. After a match of cards, it was determined that the Rock Hill team would take second place. The Redding team, the medalists at the sectional qualifier held at Rye Golf Club in September, then took home the third place prize.
The “Women’s Met Net” as it has come to be called, has grown in popularity over the years, and teams have to first qualify at their clubs and then at one of three sectional qualifying rounds. The format for the qualifying rounds as well as the championship was 18 holes of stroke play on a net better-ball basis, with the women competing at 95 percent of their Course Handicaps. For today's championship at Hampshire, the course was set to play at par 71 at 5,057 yards, providing a competitive layout for the players, and the entire field was able to play well despite the rainy conditions.
