House Wins WMGA/MGA Women's Public Links
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (July 13, 2011) – On an ideal day for golf at one of the nation’s most popular public facilities, it was Victoria House’s time to shine as she came out on top at the 14th WMGA/MGA Women’s Public Links Championship at Bethpage State Park’s Red Course in Farmingdale, N.Y. House, an 18-year-old Brooklyn resident, shot a 5-over-par 75 to earn her first MGA title, beating out a field that included 2005 winner Karen Bouloucon of Crystal Springs.
Bethpage is well-known for the throngs of spectators who took the train to the famed facility for the 2009 and 2002 U.S. Opens, so it is only fitting that House commuted by train to the event and will be riding back home with her golf bag and championship hardware. Her win is also yet another success for The First Tee of Metropolitan New York, as House is a five-year participant in First Tee programming at Mosholu Golf Course, and has played for TFTMNY on two recent Barclays Tri-Match teams.
She is a rising sophomore at the University of San Francisco, where she was a walk-on for the women’s golf team. The win gives the young House, who also grew up competing on the Met PGA Junior circuit and won the 2010 Met PGA New York City Championship, added confidence and motivation at the collegiate level. “As a walk-on, I always feel the need to prove myself. This win helps me prove to myself that I can compete in events with a very talented field,” said House.
House wasn’t the only young golfer who played well today. Finishing three strokes back with a 78 was Anna Ausanio of Beekman, and Karen Cash of Darlington (N.J.) Golf Course shot a 79 to tie for third. Ausanio and Cash, both 20 years old, played together in the final group. Cash plays her collegiate golf for East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania, while Ausanio is a member of the Central Connecticut State golf team. Also finishing in third place was Mayouko Abe of Marine Park.
