Golf Journalist Guido Cribari Passes Away at Age 95

October 12, 2010– Former MGA Distinguished Service Award winner and longtime Westchester golf writer Guido Cribari passed away on October 8 at the Lawrence Hospital Center in Bronxville, N.Y., he was 95. Cribari, a Westchester County native, was the Executive Sports Editor of the Gannett Westchester newspaper chain and covered Met Area golf for more than 45 years before retiring in 1989. Along with golf, he covered the New York Rangers and Brooklyn Dodgers.

Cribari’s countless contributions to the game of golf include his support of the Westchester Classic (later the Buick Classic) at Westchester Country Club, which raised millions of dollars for local charities over the years. He also had a powerful hand in the formation of the Westchester Golf Association Caddie Scholarship Fund, a fund that has raised more than $3.5 million and continues to support caddies and others in the pursuit of a higher education.

In 1994, Cribari was honored with the MGA’s Distinguished Service Award, the association’s highest honor. He was the first non-professional golfer to earn the Met PGA’s Sam Snead Award, in recognition of his contributions to golf. Cribari was the first recipient of the Metropolitan Golf Course Superintendents’ John Reid Award and was one of the earliest recipients of the Met Golf Writers’ Lincoln Werden Award for golf journalism. He was also a founding member of the MGWA’s Gold Tee National Awards Dinner, the largest and longest running golf dinner in the United States.
