MGA To Hold Education Forums at Area Clubs

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (February 17, 2010) – The MGA Foundation’s 2010 Spring Educational Forums schedule feature programs designed to educate club leaders and the golfing public about a wide range of topics of interest including the Rules of Golf, Handicapping procedures, golf course maintenance and new technology. The seminars include presentations by golf professionals, golf course superintendents and other industry experts.

The MGA/Met PGA Rules Workshop will be held on Tuesday, March 23 at Lake Isle Country Club in Eastchester, N.Y. This year’s seminar features Dick Rugge of the USGA and Mark Wilson of the PGA of America, who will address the crowd on a number of Rules questions and also lead a Q&A session. The 2009 seminar was attended by more than 60 golf professionals, club officials and MGA Committeemen, and this year’s seminar promises to provide a forum for lively discussion of the Rules of Golf. While open to the public, this seminar is designed to attract people who are deeply interested in the Rules of Golf. The annual MGA Rules and Handicap Seminars, the first of which takes place on Saturday, March 20 at Montclair Golf Club in West Orange, N.J., provide a refresher course for the Handicap system as well as the Rules of Golf. Montclair is followed by two other seminars, on Saturday, March 27 at the Cherry Valley Club in Garden City, N.Y., and on Saturday, April 10 at the Apawamis Club in Rye, N.Y. The 2010 Green Chairman Education Series, hosted by the MGA Foundation in conjunction with the USGA Green Section, is scheduled for Wednesday, March 24 at Willow Ridge Country Club in Harrison, N.Y. An impressive roster of speakers will address a variety of turfgrass-related issues as well as tips for club officials and superintendents to manage their budgets. Adam Moeller, an agronomist with the Northeast Region of the USGA Green Section, will address the practices necessary to produce healthy turf and good playing conditions. Stanwich Club superintendent Scott Niven and former Stanwich green chairman Peter Sanders will share their experiences and insights on superintendent/green chairman relations. Dave Oatis, director of the Northeast Region of the USGA Green Section, will be joined by Ridgewood (N.J.) superintendent Todd Raisch and Echo Lake superintendent Chris Carson to address ways in which clubs can operate their golf courses in ways that are cost-efficient. Oatis will conclude the seminar with a presentation on some answers to unusual questions he has received regarding golf course maintenance over the years.
