Locals Compete at U.S. Mid Amateur
Sea Island, GA-Fourteen top local amateurs have earned a spot in this year’s U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship which begins this week at Sea Island Golf Club in Sea Island, GA. Heading the list will be 1997 Champion Ken Bakst of Friar’s Head who still has an exemption into the Championship. Among the Met Area players who earned their spot via sectional qualifying, are current MGA Player of the Year points leader, Peter Meurer of Silver Lake, and current Westchester Amateur champion Mike Readron of Tuxedo. Roger Hoit, of Baltusrol, led all qualifiers at Cranbury Valley GC in Harwich, MA with a 71. A complete list of qualifiers is below.
The stroke play portion (36 holes) begins on Saturday with Match Play set to begin on Monday.
Met Area players have an outstanding record in this event, boasting four recent champions (George Zahringer - 2002, Bakst – 1997, Jerry Courville Jr. – 1995, and Jeff Thomas- 1993. Courville, who will be absent this year because he has turned professional, holds the record for the most match play wins in this event and Zahringer, who was unable to compete due to an injury, was the oldest champions, at 49.
