MGA Says Goodbye to a Great Friend of Golf: Gerald T. Mahoney Dies at 79

The Metropolitan Golf Association is deeply saddened to announce the passing of one of the Met Area’s greatest ambassadors of golf, and its 2001 Distinguished Service Award winner, Gerald T. Mahoney.  Mr. Mahoney died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, January 30 at  a long-term care facility in his native Yonkers where he had been living since suffering a serious stroke early in 2001.

Jerry Mahoney had been involved with the MGA for nearly 40 years, first as a volunteer tournament official (1966), as acting Executive Director from 1980-81 and as Director of Golf Programs from 1981-2001. He was well known throughout the local golf community and beyond as one of the game's most enthusiastic ambassadors. Jerry was also instrumental in establishing the Association’s long-standing relationship with MetLife.  One of the MGA's most loyal and hard working representatives, Jerry’s goodwill and passion for the game earned him the respect of anyone who loved and appreciated the game of golf.

MGA Executive Director Jay Mottola notes that,  “We have lost a very important part of our MGA family and this is a very sad day for all of us.  Jerry was a unique individual and one who left an unforgettable impression on everyone he met. He was an important part of the Association’s tremendous growth in the 80’s and 90’s and we were proud to call him our friend for so many years.”

Jerry is survived by his wife of 55 years, Peg Mahoney, their two children and seven grandchildren. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a cause that was very dear to Jerry’s heart, the MGA’s charitable Foundation in his name – MGA Foundation – 49 Knollwood Road, Elmsford, NY 10523.

In the April/May 2002 issue of The Met Golfer, the MGA printed a story detailing some of Jerry’s experiences as a lover of the game of golf.  Please read, “Motoring With Mahoney” by clicking here.
