A pair of birdies on Nos. 2 and 3 ignited a strong start for England’s Jack Whaley, who added another birdie on the par-4 eighth to secure a 5-up advantage over Cavaliere. Wins on Nos. 5 and 7 came with pars. Cavaliere logged his lone two wins of the match on Nos. 9 and 11, using pars to chip into the deficit. Lew won the eighth as Cavaliere carded bogey, but Cavaliere won the par-4 11th with birdie to return his advantage to four holes. Lew added another win on No. 15, but a tie on the 16th closed out the match, 3-and-2 in the favor of Cavaliere.
Cavaliere is underway in the Round of 16, facing Jack Whaley of England. The afternoon features coverage on Peacock/NBCSN from 3-6 p.m.

Cavaliere opened with back-to-back birdies to quickly go 2-up over Boston Bracken of St. George, Utah. He pushed his advantage to three holes with a victory on the par-5 fourth, before Bracken came back win wins on Nos. 6 and 7. After four ties, Cavaliere tallied a pair of birdies once again to win Nos. 12 and 13. Bracken and Cavaliere traded Nos. 15 and 16, as Cavaliere took the 3-and-2 victory over the rising sophomore at Arizona State. The reigning MGA Player of the Year will face Canadian Dawson Lew at 8:25 a.m., Thursday in the Round of 32.
Hagestad, making his 17th U.S. Amateur appearance, raced out to a 4-up advantage through five holes and never looked back. His opponent, Ryan Downs of Longmeadow, Mass., won Nos. 8 and 10, but Hagestad victories on Nos. 9, 11, and 15 closed out the match, 5 and 3. The 2016 MGA Player of the Year will tee off at 9:15 a.m., Thursday in his Round of 32 match.
Meanwhile, 2024 MGA Player of the Year Matt Lowe came up just short against Rudy Sautron of France, the recent winner of the Monroe Invitational who will continue his college career at Tennessee next season. The two had a back-and-forth match, with just seven ties and neither player taking more than a 1-up advantage. While the 2025 MGA Public Links and Ike champion won Nos. 11, 12 and 14 to have a 1-up lead, Sautron took Nos. 15 and 17 with pars to flip the match in his favor. On the challenging closer at Merion, both players faltered. Sautron missed the fairway right and couldn’t get back into the fairway, while Lowe’s approach from the fairway came up short in the rough. His pitch came out hot and skipped through the back of the green. A bogey putt lipped out and Sautron matched the six with a double of his own to take the 1-up victory.
