Twice as nice for Mumford

15th WGA mid am winner

Kingston N.Y. (October 22, 2024) On a beautiful October day, our defending Champion Mark Mumford of Westchester Country Club topped the leaderboard to claim the 15th Westchester Mid-Amateur Championship once again. Mumford went the distance winning after taking the lead in round one.

After posting a three under par 69 in round one, the second round proved the same as he shot two under par for the day to finish at 5-under par three shots clear of second.

Even as the defending Champion, Mumford did not have the highest expectations having not played much golf lately.

“I had pretty low expectations, I haven’t played since the N.Y. Mid-Am about a month ago, I played well yesterday and figured that after posting three under if I played well, it would be tough to catch.”

Mumford started his round with very steady play on the front nine recording all pars. He didn’t get phased by Al Tenembaum of Manhattan Woods who recorded five birdies on his first eight holes and flew up the leaderboard.

The back nine proved similar to round one where Mumford found three birdies on the closing six holes to seal the championship.

Finishing in a solo second place after firing the low round of the tournament is Al Tenembaum. After shooting up the leaderboard with five birdies on the front along with an eagle on the back Tenembaum added two bogeys on his way in. The final round effort gave him a solo second place finish five shots clear of third.

Rounding out the podium is Doug Kleeschulte who plays out of Wiltwyck. After finishing in the top three last year, Kleeschulte back it up again with a solid performance of 74 & 73 to finish at three over par.
