First-Place winners included Tom Mackin in Business Writing for his “Thrown for a Loop” piece on the MGA’s efforts to keep kids in caddying, Ken Van Vechten in Equipment and Apparel for his “Forge A Head” story on forged vs. cast irons, and Craig Brass in Travel for his “Come In, We’re Open” story on Wisconsin prior to its hosting of the U.S. Open.
The magazine’s August/September issue was noted as an Outstanding Achiever, recognizing the work of Editor Jeff Neuman. The issue’s cover story—John Paul Newport’s “Best Practices” piece which also earned Outstanding Achiever honors—focused on players getting the most out of their practice. The issue also featured a recap of the memorable Modern Dream 18 Presented by Rolex and a preview of the Presidents Cup at Liberty National, while both Mackin and Van Vechten’s First-Place winning stories were also in the issue.
Also earning Outstanding Achiever recognition were David Barrett in Business Writing for his “Game Changer?” story on Topgolf’s arrival in New Jersey, Bill Fields in the Feature category for his “Future Stock” piece on junior golf, Adam Schupak in the Profile category for his Up Close story “Jake (Heart) NY” about Peter Jacobsen, and Ray Tennenbaum in Travel for his look at France in “Vive Le Golf.”
An independent panel of three judges in each category determines First-Place winners and Outstanding Achievers. Judges use a point system with several criteria. Scoring is done by judges when possible without knowledge of the person responsible for the work, or of the other judges in the category. The number of Outstanding Achievers in a category is determined by total entries and scoring range in the category.
ING is a non-profit, media-based networking organization and conducts the awards program for its membership, which is open to anyone in the golf industry and media.
