Chris DeForest: My U.S. Open Experience

The biggest Met Area story at this year’s Open was 22-year-old Chris DeForest of Cottekill, N.Y., and Rondout Country Club. DeForest is a recent graduate of the University of Illinois and won the 2006 Carter Cup at Baltustrol. He advanced through the gauntlet of local and sectional qualifying and this was his first Open appearance, as well as his inaugural tournament as a professional.

This was the 17th year of the event, which has become a very special day on the MGA calendar. With more than $80,000 raised in support of the MGA Foundation’s GOLFWORKS Student Intern program, the day was a tremendous success.

(June 14, 2011)–The deepest field in Met Area amateur golf assembles at one of the country’s most prestigious clubs when the 56th Ike Championship presented by Canon Business Solutions comes to Somerset Hills Country Club in Bernardsville, N.J., on June 27 and 28. In hosting the Ike, the MGA’s 54-hole stroke play championship, Somerset Hills will now have hosted two of the MGA’s major championships, the other being the Met Amateur in both 1982 and 2003.

Garcia Selected for First Tee Life Skills & Leadership Academy

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (June 13, 2011) – Faith Garcia of Stamford, Conn., has been selected to attend The First Tee’s 2011 Life Skills and Leadership Academy held at Arizona State University on August 3-9. She will join 96 First Tee participants representing 83 chapters from across the country at this special conference. Garcia, 15, is a sixth-year participant at The First Tee of Metropolitan New York’s Fairchild Wheeler site in Bridgeport, Conn., and will be entering her sophomore year at Trinity Catholic High School in September.
