LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y. (August 17, 2015) - Jon Doppelt and David Doppelt of Fresh Meadow won the 65th Father & Son Championship today after carding a stellar 4-under 66.

The Doppelt duo was at 6-under going into the 17th, and bogied the last two holes. Jon said, “we were leaking oil a little bit but David kept saying that ‘this was our course; this is our tournament’

David usually caddies for his father and brothers and, because this is home course, came in with a determined mentality saying “I didn’t want to leave here without a win and when I was looking at that last putt, I just kept thinking that I can’t let this get away.”

Leading the field all day with a 3-under 67, Jay Linn Card, Jr. and son Jay Lin Card III of Gardiners Bay played a perfect round today, sinking three birdies along the way, and set the bar high for competitors until the very last group.

Tied for third at 2-under 68 were three groups: Sean and John Byrne of Garden City Golf Club, Peter and Matthew Hirsch of Woodmere, and Pat and Evan DeLuca of MGA eClub - Westchester/Fairfield. 

Kevin and Connor Dwyer of Plandome and Westhampton (respectively) earned low net with a 6-under 64 net total. Kevin and Danny Syring of Alpine won the professional division with a 2-over 72.

This year’s championship marks the first year that competitors were vying for the newly dedicated trophy in honor of Terry McBride, who passed away this past year after a tough battle against cancer. Not only are the members of the McBride family devoted supporters of golf in the Met Area, but they have been a consistent force in the MGA Father & Son Championship. 

In 1964, Terry won the championship with his father Joseph and dominated the field the next two years to retain the title. Following that, Joseph and brother Michael McBride captured the title in 1970, which was followed up again by Michael McBride in 2001, reclaiming the trophy alongside his son Michael McBride, Jr. With this history, there was no better way to honor Terry’s memory, but to name a beautiful, and newly donated “McBride Cup” in his memory. 

Fresh Meadow Country Club played to a field of 98 teams for a par 70 at 6,352 yards. 

Created in 1951, The MGA Father and Son Championship is 18 holes of stroke play in the Pinehurst format, meaning that both partners drive from the tee and then each plays a second shot with the other's ball.  After the second shot, a choice is made regarding the ball with which the hole will be completed - alternate shots being continued into the hole. This is one of the most beloved championships in the Met Area because of the opportunity to honor the bond between family, while at the same, making for one of the most competitive tournaments the MGA has to offer.
