Dunlap Leads Field After 3-under 67 at Old Oaks
PURCHASE, N.Y. (June 8, 2015) – The U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying round is underway at Century and Old Oaks Country Clubs in Purchase, N.Y. and the field of 71 competitors battling for four spots and two alternates have completed their first round. After 18 holes it’s Scott Dunlap of Duluth, Ga., who leads the way thanks to a phenomenal 3-under 67 at Old Oaks.
Dunlap, who competes on the Champions Tour, is looking to qualify for his sixth U.S. Open of his career, his last coming in 2002 at Bethpage Black. The 51-year-old earned his first Champions Tour victory at the Boeing Classic, and has a wealth of PGA TOUR experience, having played in over 200 events in his career.
Two-time U.S. Open Champion Lee Janzen of Orlando, Fla., carded a 2-under 69 at Century, with three birdies and a bogey. Qualifying for Chambers Bay would mean Janzen has done it 20 times in his career, the last coming in 2008 at Torrey Pines. Janzen earned his first Champions Tour win at this year’s ACE Group Classic in his first year on the tour.
Ten-year Web.com Tour veteran Scott Harrington of Scottsdale, Ariz., fired a 2-under 68 at Old Oaks. The Northwestern Alum has one top 25 on the season, coming at the Rex Hospital Open, where he tied for 19th. Matching Harrington’s 2-under 68 at Old Oaks was 2014 MGA Player of the Year David Pastore of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The 2014 Met Amateur and Ike Champion hopes to qualify for his first U.S. Open today.
Also at 2-under after 69s at Century are amateurs Matt Parziale of Brockton, Mass., and Vinay Ramesh of Newtown, Pa.
Well within the hunt is another Web.com Tour player, Jamie Lovemark of Scottsdale, Ariz., who fired a 1-under 69 at Old Oaks. Also with a 1-under 69 at Old Oaks was Mark Watros of Darien, Conn. Two-time MGA Player of the Year Mike Miller of Brewster, N.Y., shot a 1-under 70 at Century and hopes it leads to his first U.S. Open appearance.
Other players near the top of the leader board include amateur Christian Vozza of Orlando, Fla., and Albert Miner of Katy, Texas, who each carded even par 70s at Old Oaks.
Three-time PGA TOUR winner Johnson Wagner of Saint Simons Island, Ga., fired a 1-over 71 at Old Oaks. He will need a solid round at Century to qualify for his first U.S. Open since 2007. 2013 Met Amateur Champion Pat Wilson of Andover, N.J., also shot a 1-over 71 at Old Oaks.
