Boyd, 62, became a member of the MGA Executive Committee in 2005 and in 2009 was elected to serve as treasurer. He remained in that position for two years, and then in 2011 he became secretary/treasurer until 2012, where he was then elected vice president from 2012-2014.
The new president plans on achieving many goals in his term, but first and foremost Boyd plans to increase the brand awareness of the MGA. He will take a multi-faceted approach that will include more interaction with club leaders and using all of the communication vehicles and technology at the MGA’s disposal to promote the brand to as many Met Area golfers as possible.
“It is a huge honor for me to be elected as the Association’s President,” Boyd said. “I look forward to working with my fellow officers, the Executive Committee and Foundation Board to serve this great game.”
Boyd has been the president and CEO of Manufacturers Reserve Supply Inc. since 1979 and has taken the company to new heights. His responsibilities during his tenure have included representing the company with its major customers, coordinating marketing of the company’s products and services, as well as directing the organization’s overall financial plans and policies.
In addition to his affiliation with the MGA, Boyd has also been a member of the regional affairs committee of the USGA since 2006, is a Golf Digest Rating panelist and a member of the United States Senior Golf Association.
Steve is also an accomplished golfer and two-time MGA champion. He won the MGA Father & Son with his son, Brian in 2004. In 1982 he was also part of a winning team capturing the “MGA Met Net” team Championship, now known as the MGA Four-Ball with his father. Boyd has also competed in many USGA, MGA, and NJSGA events including the Met Open, Met Am, and Ike championships.
He is a two-time Baltusrol Club Champion, winning in 2002 and 1994, and is the reigning Senior Club Champion. At Spring Brook Country Club in Morristown, N.J., Steve is a six-time Club Champion. He has served on the Board of Governors at both clubs.
More than 230 club delegates, MGA Committee members, members of the press, and representatives of the local and national golf communities attended the MGA Annual Meeting & Dinner. During the meeting, the audience heard from Pete Bevacqua, the CEO of the PGA of America. He spoke about the many new initiatives being put into place by the PGA of America, including PGA Junior League Golf and the “Get Golf Ready” initiative. Bevacqua also highlighted the Association’s major championships that will be coming to the Met Area in the near future, including the PGA Championship at Baltusrol in 2016, at Bethpage in 2019, and then at Trump – Bedminster in 2022, the Ryder Cup at Bethpage in 2024, and this June’s first KPMG LPGA Championship at Westchester Country Club.
Also at the meeting, the 2014 MGA Jerry Courville Sr. Player of the Year Award was presented to David Pastore of Griff Harris Men’s Club. The recent University of Virginia graduate and now five-time MGA champion finished at the top of the MGA Player of the Year standings thanks to his incredible victories at this year’s Ike and Met Amateur Championships.
The evening concluded with the presentation of the MGA’s highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award, to former MGA President Donald J. Hendler. The award recognized his exemplary three decades of service to golf in the Met Area. He has made countless contributions to the MGA, LIGA, and Long Island Caddie Scholarship funds, particularly in areas of strategic planning, branding, and fiscal responsibility that have had an enormous impact on the growth and stability of these organizations. The large and appreciative audience showed great respect and appreciation for the accomplishments of both Hendler and Pastore as each accepted their respective award.
