UPDATED 4:00 p.m. (September 9, 2014) - The run for Jersey City, N.J.'s Matt Mattare at the U.S. Mid-Amateur at his home track ended in the Round of 16 this afternoon. Mattare lost a grueling match 2 & 1 to the 7th overall seeded Todd White and won't be moving on to the quarterfinals.

Ned Zachar of Bedford, N.Y. lost his match in 19 holes against Michael Harrington.

UPDATED 1:59 p.m. (September 9, 2014) - The two Met Area locals in the Round of 32 each won their matches and will move on to the Round of 16, which will be played today.

Matt Mattare of Jersey City, N.J. dominated his Round of 32 match, winning 6 & 4 over Stephen Anderson. He is currently 2 down through the first three holes in his Round of 16 match against Todd White.

Bedford, N.Y.'s Ned Zachar claimed his Round of 32 match 2 & 1 over German Tagle. His Round of 16 match will begin today at 2:10 p.m.

UPDATED 4:00 p.m. (September 8, 2014) - Only two Met Area players advanced through the Round of 64 in the U.S. Mid Amateur at Saucon Valley. Jersey City's Matt Mattare defeated John Patterson, 1 up, to move on to the Round of 32. Ned Zachar of Bedford, N.Y., won his match 2 & 1 over Matthew Swan.

Unfortunately Trevor Randolph lost his match on the 18th hole to Michael Castlefore and will not advance.

UPDATED 8:14 p.m. (September 7, 2014) - Stroke play qualifying is complete at Saucon Valley for the U.S. Mid-Amateur and four Met Area locals advanced into the match play portion of the Championship. 

Andy Latowski of Plainsboro, N.J. fired rounds of 75 and 70 for a 36-hole total of 3-over 145. That would be enough for Latowski to grab the 13th overall seed in the match play bracket, which pits him against the 52nd overall seeded Jeff Golden of Jacksonville, Fla. tomorrow at 9:40 a.m. 

Also moving on is 2013 Met Amateur runner-up Trevor Randolph of Franklin Lakes, N.J. after rounds of 78 and 70 for a 36-hole total of 6-over 148. Randolph earned the 31st overall seed and he will take on the 34th overall seeded Michael Castleforte of Chicago, Ill. tomorrow at 10:50 a.m. 

The home field advantage was huge for 2012 Met Amateur runner-up Matt Mattare of Jersey City, N.J. Mattare carded two 3-over rounds of 74 for a total of 6-over 148 at his home track. He is the 42nd overall seed and will play the 23rd seeded John Patterson of Bluffton, S.C. tomorrow at 11:50 a.m. The fourth local to get in to match play was Ned Zachar of Bedford, N.Y. thanks to a pair of 75s for a 36-hole total of 8-over 150. Zachar grabbed the 54th overall seed, which puts him against the 11th overall seeded Matthew Swan of Atlanta, Ga. tomorrow at 1 p.m.

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (September 2, 2014) - The U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship heads to Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa. September 6-11 and many of the top 25 years and older amateurs in the Met Area are in the field.

Two-time MGA Player of the Year Joe Saladino of Huntington, N.Y.,  leads the way for the locals in the field. The 34-year-old earned his second medalist honors in a U.S. Mid-Am SQR at Brookville Country Club in July with a score of 3-under 68. He will hope to top his best finish in a U.S. Mid-Amateur, which was a round of 16 appearance in 2010 at Atlantic Golf Club.

Also in the field is 1997 U.S. Mid-Amateur Champion Ken Bakst of Riverhead, N.Y. The former Met Amateur and two-time MGA Father & Son Champion will look to claim his second U.S. Mid-Am title at Saucon Valley. Aside from the win in 1997, Bakst has seen plenty of success in this event. He has qualified for the match play portion of the event five times, his last coming in 2005. His best finish since his victory was an appearance in the quarterfinals in 1999.

Another past MGA Champion making his way to Pennsylvania is 2012 MGA/MetLife Public Links Champion Eric LeFante of Branchburg, N.J. This will be Lefante’s first appearance in a U.S. Mid-Amateur. Making his second appearance in a U.S. Mid-Amateur is Trevor Randolph of Franklin Lakes, N.J. The 2013 NJSGA Mid-Amateur Champion last qualified for the U.S. Mid-Am in 2012 and this year hopes to advance to match play.

Making his third U.S. Mid-Amateur appearance is Nick Desai of West Orange, N.J., who qualified for match play at the Met Amateur this past July. Also making his third appearance, in consecutive fashion, in the U.S. Mid-Am is 2012 Met Amateur runner-up Matt Mattare of Jersey City, N.J. Mattare reached the quarterfinals in the 2012 Mid-Am, which was his first USGA event. The 28-year-old should know the host course pretty well as his father is the general manager and director of golf at Saucon Valley.

David Weisfield of Scarsdale, N.Y will head to Pennsylvania for his second straight appearance in the U.S. Mid-Amateur.

Other locals in the field include reigning Mittlemark Invitational champion Ned Zachar of Bedford, N.Y., 2006 Long Island Amateur champion Adam Pecora of Oyster Bay, N.Y., 2010 Richardson Memorial champion Hans Albertsson of Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., Richard Feldman of Bedford, N.Y., Jordan Kaplan of Plainview, N.Y., Brian Kilduff of New York, N.Y., Andy Latowski of Plainsboro, N.J., Richard Messina of Rockville Centre, N.Y., and Benjamin Wescoe of New York, N.Y.
