UPDATED 2:58 p.m. August 14 - The amazing run at the U.S. Amateur at Atlanta Athletic Club for Cameron Young of Scarborough, N.Y. has come to an end in the quarterfinals. After coming up with some late round magic in each of his first three matches, he came up just short in his quarterfinal match against Gunn Yang of Korea, losing 2 down. Yang won the 17th with a par and then eagled the final hole, the par 5 18th, for a spectacular victory over Young.

While Young won't be moving on, by making it is as far as he did he earned himself an exemption in next year's U.S. Amateur at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Illinois. Next up for the 17-year-old is the 99th Met Open at Trump - Bedminster where with a win, he would become the youngest winner in the event's history.

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (August 6, 2014) - The U.S. Amateur Championship heads to Johns Creek, Ga. next week at the Atlanta Athletic Club, host of three PGA Championships, a U.S. Open and a U.S. Women’s Open, a Ryder Cup, and many other prestigious championships over the years. The best amateurs in the world will all be vying for the Havemeyer Trophy and a chance to join an elite group of champions that includes Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jack Nicklaus, and Arnold Palmer. The Met Area will be very well represented at this year’s championship, with ten locals making the trip to Georgia. The Championship will begin with 36 holes of on-site stroke play qualifying, which will reduce the field to the final 64 match play bracket.

Leading the way and playing in his third U.S. Amateur in the last four years is Max Buckley of Rye, N.Y. The 2013 MGA Player of the Year hopes to return to the quarterfinals like he did in 2011 at Erin Hills.  Playing in their third straight U.S. Amateurs are Dylan Crowley of Los Angeles, Calif. and Steven Zychowski of Mendham, N.J.  Crowley, a member of the St. John’s Golf Team, is a regular MGA competitor and earned medalist honors at his sectional qualifying round for the U.S. Amateur. Zychowski has put together an excellent summer, finishing in the top ten at the Ike, qualifying for match play at the Met Amateur, and tying for second at the NJSGA Amateur.

Competing in their second straight U.S. Amateurs are Theo Humphrey of Greenwich, Conn. and 2013 Met Junior Champion Cameron Young of Scarborough, N.Y. Humphrey, 2011 MGA/MetLife Boys Champion, is off to Vanderbilt this fall to play on the golf team. Young on the other hand still has a year left of high school, but he has already committed to play golf at Wake Forest in the fall of 2015. Both young guns have quite the future ahead of them and could really make some noise in Georgia if they can qualify for match play. Also in the field is another young rising star, Thomas La Morte of Haworth, N.J. La Morte finished fourth at the Carter Cup and tied for 7^th at the Ike. The 18-year-old is off to Campbell University this fall and will compete on the golf team.

Rounding out the Met Area locals heading to Atlanta Athletic Club are Ryan Snouffer of Sparta, N.J., Christian Fitzgerald of Plandome Manor, N.Y., Greg Reilly of New Canaan, Conn., and 2010 MGA/MetLife Public Links champ Brian Komline of Bridgewater, N.J.
