Christian Fitzgerald Medals at Ike Qualifier at Westhampton
WESTHAMPTON BEACH, N.Y. (May 20, 2014) – A field of 115 amateurs braved the windy conditions today at Westhampton Country Club in Westhampton Beach, N.Y. to compete for 16 qualifying spots (plus ties) for this year’s 59th Ike MGA Stroke Play Championship.

The medalist today was Christian Fitzgerald of Friar’s Head, shooting a 1-over 71. A stroke behind Fitzgerald at 2-over 72 was Tom Trakoval of Port Jefferson. At 3-over 73 and also moving on to Montclair Golf Club for the two-day stroke play event was Brian Hale of Plainfield.
Former U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Ken Bakst of Friar’s Head qualified with a 4-over 74 and matching that 74 was Dave Segot of Nassau Players.
Rounding out the qualifiers who will be making their way to Montclair on June 23-24 are as follows: Conor McGovern of Tamarack (75), Alan Specht of Wheatley Hills (75), Thomas Dutton of Emerald Golf (75), Garrett Engel of Seawane (75), Edward Gibstein of Engineers (76), Zach Grossman of Montauk Downs (76); and Jake Card of Gardiner’s Bay, Sean Byrne of Garden City, Alex Lagowitz of Essex County, Colin Warren of Rockville, Hyun Cheol Lee of Harbor Links, Rich Messina of Sands Point, all of whom shot 77.
Westhampton Country Club played to a par 70 at a total of 6,350 yards.
The 59th Ike Championship will be held at Montclair Golf Club in West Orange, N.J. on June 23-24.The 54 hole, stroke play championship is the MGA’s first “major” championship of the 2014 season, and the MGA is conducting a total of five sectional qualifying rounds throughout the Met Area to determine the final field.
