OYSTER BAY, N.Y. (May 5th, 2014) – Six spots were on the line at the U.S. Open Local Qualifying Round at the Mill River Club in Oyster Bay, N.Y.
Nicholas Beddow of Shirley, N.Y., and Matthew Dobyns of Lake Success, N.Y., shared medalist honors after firing matching scores of 3-under 69.
Dobyns has already won on the national level, breaking records in 2012 with his eight stroke victory at the PGA Professional National Championship. He is the Head Professional at Fresh Meadow and also claimed the 2013 Long Island Open.
This is Beddow’s first time at advancing to the Sectional Qualifying Round. He won the 2013 MasterCard Long Island PGA Championship and is a frequent competitor in the Met PGA’s tournament circuit.
Qualifying with scores of 2-under 70 was Sam Lyons of Lakewood Ranch, Fla., and Timothy Puetz of Huntington, N.Y. The only amateur to make it through the local qualifying today was Jonathan Lai of San Jose, Calif., who recorded an even par 72.
Abbie Valentine of Bayville, N.Y., a frequent MGA competitor and a player on the PGA TOUR Latinoamerica, also shot an even 72 to earn his way to the Sectional Qualifying Round.
After four players finished at 1-over 73, it was decided in a playoff that amateur Matt Lowe of Farmingdale, N.Y., will serve as the first alternate. John Guyton of Rockville Centre, N.Y., is the second alternate.
Mill River played to a par 72 at 6,620 yards. This was the first of four local qualifying rounds conducted by the MGA before the MGA conducts a Sectional Qualifying Round at Old Oaks and Century Country Clubs on June 2, one of ten Sectional Qualifying Rounds held in the U.S to determine the final field for the 114th U.S. Open Championship at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club on June 9 – 15.
