George Zahringer Named to Walker Cup Team
Far Hills, N.J. – George Zahringer, 50, of New York, N.Y., earned one of the final two spots on the 10-man United States of America team for the Walker Cup Match that was played at Ganton Golf Club in North Yorkshire, England, Sept. 6-7, against a team representing Great Britain and Ireland.
The Great Britain and Ireland team captured the Cup for a third consecutive time in one of the closest matches ever. Zahringer lost his foursome and singles matches the first day and teamed with Lee Williams to earn a halve in his final day foursome match.
This was Zahringer’s, the reigning U.S. Mid-Amateur champion (age 25 and older) after being runner-up in 2001, first Walker Cup selection. He reached the quarterfinals of the 2003 U.S. Amateur at Oakmont to earn his spot on the team. His selection is another milestone achievement in the brilliant career of the nine-time Metropolitan Golf Association Player of the Year.
