MGA Team Finishes Third in 2003 Williamson Cup Matches

ELMSFORD, N.Y.-A four-man junior team representing the Metropolitan Golf Association finished third in the 30th Williamson Cup Matches held today at Royal Montreal Golf Club in Île Bizard, Ontario.  Teams representing ten Golf Associations throughout the United States and Canada competed in this 36-hole stroke play event, which counted three of the four-team members aggregate scores each round to determine the team championship.  Individual prizes were also awarded.

Representing the MGA were Andrew Giuliani of New York, NY, son of former mayor Rudolph Giuliani and runner-up in the 2003 MGA Junior; Scott Chisholm of Essex Fells, NJ, qualifier for the 2002 USGA Junior Championship; Christopher Holmes of Shelter Island, NY, qualifier for the 2001 USGA Junior Championship; and Tyler Kupper of Weston, CT, medalist at the 2002 USGA Junior qualifier.

Chisholm and Holmes both tied for 4th low round with four-over par 74s in the morning, which left the MGA team in third place after the first round.  Giuliani’s 78 accounted for a 226 team score which left them only two shots behind the Pennsylvania Golf Association (224) and three behind the Golf Association of Ontario (223) with 18-holes to play.

In the afternoon, Pennsylvania’s team continued to shine led by standout Garret Basalyga, who matched his morning round of 73 in the afternoon, to pull away from the MGA and Ontario teams.  Giuliani carded the MGA's low afternoon round with a 74 to go with Chishom's 75 and Kupper’s 80, for an afternoon team score of 229.  Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as Pennsylvania (442) finished with a four shot victory over Ontario who finished second at 446 while the MGA finished third at 455.  Basalyga’s 146 total captured the low individual honors while Chisholm finished in a three-way tie for fifth at 149.  The defending champs from the Golf Association of Delaware finished in 7th place at 468.
