"Q" School Update: PGA Tour Second Stage-Champions Final Stage
St. Augustine, F.L.--Former Met Open and Met Amateur champion Jim McGovern (left) of Hackensack, NJ, fired a final round 66 to finish in 2nd place and earn a coveted spot in the Final Stage of Qualifying School at the Black Horse Golf Club in Seaside, CA. Met Amateur Champion Andrew Svoboda, despite a valiant effort, could not overcome his first round 78 and finished tied for 51st at the St Johns Country Club in St. Augustine, FL. At the same site Matt Davidson’s (West Windsor, NJ) solid 15-under-par finish earns him a trip to the final stage along with McGovern, Johnson Wagner and Chris Nallen who both qualified last week at Stonebridge Ranch in McKinney, TX .
Meanwhile, heading into the sixth and final round at the Final Stage of Champions Tour Qualifying School being played at the King & Bear Course in St. Augustine, FL, Deepdale’s Darrell Kestner and former Sunningdale teaching professional Delroy Cambridge are tied for 17th and 21st place respectively. They are chasing former Glen Oaks professional Don Reese, who grabbed a hold of the lead over the weekend. The top seven finishers will receive full exemptions to the Champions Tour for the 2005 season. The next eight will get conditional exemptions, allowing those players to enter tournaments that fully exempt players skip. Knickerbocker’s Ed Whitman failed to make the 72 hole cut.
