Donald J. Hendler Elected President of the MGA
Harrison, NY- Donald J. Hendler of Brookville, New York, was elected to a one-year term as President of the Metropolitan Golf Association at the Association’s 107th Annual Meeting on Wednesday evening, December 1st, at the Westchester Country Club. Hendler, a member of the Meadow Brook Club, is the Association’s 57th President, and will head a 22-member Executive Committee as well as serve as Chairman of the Association’s charitable Foundation, which promotes the game of golf to Met Area youth.
Mr. Hendler has been an active MGA committeeman since 1991, serving as the Association’s Secretary/Treasurer and Vice-President before his tenure as President, and has also been a member of the MGA’s Long Range Planning, Public Information, and Tournament/Rules committees. He has also served on the Executive Committee of the Long Island Golf Association, on the Board of the Long Island Caddie Scholarship Foundation, and on the MGA Foundation Board since its inception.
The 59-year-old Hendler is a graduate of Franklin & Marshall College and an executive with the Levitton Manufacturing Company, a leading producer of electrical wiring devices. He lives in Brookville with his wife of 36 years, Adrienne; the couple has three children, and three grandchildren. Hendler is an excellent golfer, having won nine club championships in the Met Area and qualified for numerous regional championships. “Don Hendler brings a wealth of experience as the new president of the MGA, “ says Executive Director Jay Mottola. “He is a long time tournament player, an active committee representative for the LIGA and MGA and someone who is still involved in running a dynamic business-his record speaks for itself.”
Also elected at the Annual Meeting were Vice-President, J. Michael Carter of Baltusrol Golf Club, and Secretary-Treasurer, Leslie A. Schupak, of Metropolis Country Club.
The MGA’s 22-member Executive Committee includes two newly elected members, Lawrence Rafferty of Deepdale Golf Club and Roger H. Tulcin of Quaker Ridge Golf Club. They replace John H. Lynch of St. George’s Golf & Country Club and Paul Dillon of Winged Foot, who completed two very successful years as President. Also joining the Committee is Martin J. Bartow of the Cherry Valley Club, who succeeds Peter L. Barry of Huntington Crescent Club as President of the Long Island Golf Association, and Kathy Light of Port Jefferson Country Club, who succeeds Gerri Scarpa of the North Jersey Country Club as President of the Women’s Metropolitan Golf Association.
Hendler said of his election, “I am honored and privileged to be in such company, from our new officers and committeemen to past presidents of the MGA. I am grateful for the opportunity to give back to the game of golf and further its growth in the Met Area.”
Over 250 club delegates, MGA committeemen, members of the press, and representatives of the local and national golf communities attended the Annual Meeting. The highlights of the meeting were the presentation of the Association’s highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award, to former MGA President and Player of the Year John Baldwin of Meadow Brook, and the Jerry Courville, Sr. MGA Player of the Year Award to Peter Meurer of Silver Lake Golf Club.
The MGA was founded in 1897, and is one of the nation’s oldest and largest regional golf associations, with 516 member clubs in the tri-state Metropolitan Area.
