Matthew Rendell Wins Mid-Am At The Bridge
NOYACK, N.Y. (October 10, 2024) - Matthew Rendell of Glen Cove Golf Club claimed the 2024 Long Island Mid-Amateur Championship presented by JBA-Morell on Thursday at The Bridge.
“I've been playing this game a long time. I've been playing in the Met circuit for a long time and this my first win and I've always believed I was good enough," Rendell said. "The last two years I've really re-dedicated myself to the game and put a lot of work in and it's really nice to see the rewards.”
Rendell defeated Colin Dolph of Nassau Country Club on the first playoff hole. Rendell carded two birdies during his final round, playing the last eleven holes at one under par. He made birdie on the 18th to force a sudden death playoff at six over par with Dolph, who finished in the group ahead of him. Dolph came into this year’s event as the defending champion after winning in a playoff last year at his home club of Nassau Country Club.
In the playoff (Hole No, 1), Rendell found the fairway off the tee, while Dolph missed right into the trees. Rendell knocked his approach to within six feet and with Dolph in trouble and failing to get onto the green in two, Rendell would win the hole and the playoff with a two-putt par.
“I think it was playing 480 today, I had 108 coming in and thankfully Colin gave me one really," Rendell said. "I saw him hit it right this morning and he did it again and got in a bit of trouble and so I really took the pressure off in that second shot. I could just free-wheel it a little bit and thankfully went close and got the job done."
Rendell started the day two shots back after shooting an opening round +2/74. The course played more challenging in the second round with colder temperatures and a steady wind throughout the day. After a slow start, Rendell got one back making birdie on the par-4 eighth. The birdie would start a great stretch of golf as he finished without dropping another stroke.
Colin Dolph finsihed as the runner-up. Rounding out the podium is Jackson Weisbrot of MGA eClub Long Island and Sam Horowitz of Inwood Country Club, who both finished the 36-hole championship at 8-over par.
