Live From: 28th Lexus MGA Senior Open Championship

HEWLETT HARBOR, N.Y. (August 27, 2024) -- Three-time Met Open champion Mark Brown set the pace in round one of the 28th Lexus MGA Senior Open Championship at The Seawane Club with a 6-under 66. Three-time Senior Open champion Mark Mielke, who's aiming to defend his title in the championship, sits just one shot back at 5-under alongside Pedro Benenati of Harbor Links.

In 2018, Mielke and Brown played in the final pairing and separated themselves from the field in a battle for the title at Glen Head Country Club, where Mielke edged Brown by one shot to earn his second Senior Open title. This year, the duo once again plays in the final pairing, though more players sit well within striking distance to capture the titles themselves. This includes an accomplished group that starts the day two shots back at 4-under: past Senior Open and Met Open champion Jim McGovern of White Beeches, past Met Open champion Frank Bensel of Century, two-time MGA Mid-Amateur champion Trevor Randolph of Arcola, Greg Bisconti of The Saint Andrew's Golf Club, and Michael Laudien of Rotella Memorial.

Overall, 16 players broke par in the first round at The Seawane Club, taking advantage of a relatively calm day. Six of eight past champions in the field made the cut, which included 47 players at at 3-over 75 or better.

Professionals are vying for the $5,000 top prize.
