Live From: 107th Met Junior Championship

SCARSDALE, N.Y. (July 15, 2024) – The morning 18 is complete at the 107th Met Junior sponsored by MetLife from Sunningdale Country Club. Dean Muratore of Dix Hills, N.Y. and Alex Yong of Stockton, N.J share the lead after round one. 

Muratore closed his round with three consecutive birdies on the par-5 16th, par-3 17th, and par-4 18th. The 17-year-old was 1-over on his round after 12 holes before a birdie on No. 13 got him back to even par. 

Yong recorded five birdies and two bogeys on his opening 18 holes. The 18-year-old birdied Nos. 4 and 6 to move to 3-under and closed his round with three straight pars.

Lance Hollingshead of Basking Ridge, N.J. carded an opening round 2-under 68. Hollingshead fired four birdies and four bogeys. Hollingshead went out in 2-under 33 with birdies on No. 4 and 7. The 18-year-old added a birdie on the par-4 10th before bogeying No. 11. To close the round, Hollingshead birdied No. 17 and bogeying No. 18. 

Jack Chung of Greenwich, Conn. also finished the morning at 2-under. Chung had four birdied a double-bogey on his card. He started strong with a 3-under 32 on the front nine. The birdies came on Nos. 4, 6, and 7. Chad Ruggiero of Greenwich, Conn. joined Chung and Hollingshead at 2-under. Ruggiero got to 4-under after a birdie on No. 10 before a double bogey on the par-4 11th and par-4 18th. 

Rhett DuPont of New Canaan, Conn., Tommy Mangan Harrison, N.Y., and Liam Pasternak of Morristown, N.J. were part of a group of four golfers at even par after round one. 

Through the first round, players who were 2-over or better were in the top 16 and in range to make match play. Players at plus-3 would be on the cut line for a playoff for the final spot in the match-play field. 

Sunningdale last hosted the junior in 1938, when William Clark won 3 & 2 over Wilson H. Flohr. A host of architects have left their mark on the layout, from Seth Raynor, Walter Travis and A. W. Tillinghast to Stephen Kay and most recently Mike DeVries. Recent work has included the updating of greens and bunkers.
