Live From: 122nd Met Amateur Championship
BERNARDSVILLE, N.J. (August 4, 2024) – Though Christian Cavaliere of Hudson National earned a 1-up advantage on the 15th hole following a 3-hour, 40 minute suspension of play, Donte Groppuso of Wiltwyck won Nos. 17 and 18 with pars to quickly turn the tables and capture the title in the 122nd Met Amateur Championship at Somerset Hills Country Club.
Cavaliere had made birdie on the par-4 15th and the two tied the par-3 16th with threes. On 17, Cavaliere missed the green wide left and couldn't get up and down while Groppuso two-putted from the back of the green. On the final hole, Cavaliere's approach spun to the left front of the green to a left hole location, while Groppuso put his approach hole high 12 feet away. Cavaliere made an impressive chip to five feet, but after Groppuso missed his birdie look, Cavaliere's par attempt just slipped by the hole.
Groppuso, 22, was making his debut in the Met Amateur, while Cavaliere is now a three-time runner-up in the MGA's oldest championship. Full recap and videos to come.
