Qualifying: 107th Met Junior, 56th Boys'

Sunningdale Country Club, this year's host of the 107th Met Junior Championship Sponsored by MetLife.


ELMSFORD, N.Y. (June 7, 2024) - Between June 10 and June 19, the Met Area’s young rising stars will compete for spots in MGA junior championships. The first of the events, the 107th Met Junior Championship Sponsored by MetLife, will be played July 17-19 at Sunningdale Country Club in Scarsdale, N.Y., with the 56th MGA/MetLife Boys’ Championship following, taking place at White Beeches Golf and Country Club in Haworth, N.J., July 30-31.

The Met Junior challenges the region's best young players, with players competing over 36 holes of stroke play at the championship proper, with the top 16 players advancing to match play to compete for the title. For the MGA/MetLife Boys' Championship, qualfiers are 15 and under and go directly into a 16-player match play bracket. This championship often serves as a first-time match play experience for the young competitors.

As the oldest junior championship in the nation, the Met Junior has produced unforgettable moments and historic champions such as MGA Players of the Year Andrew Svoboda, Michael Miller, Mark Costanza, and David Pastore. Although half as old as the Met Junior, the Boys’ Championship has produced great champions as well, such as three-time MGA champion Matthew Lowe and four-time MGA champion Luke Sample.

79th Westchester Junior Championship

Thomas Bonomo of Stanwich topped the leaderboard posting a 3-under 69. Bonomo carded four birdies on the back nine to set the mark to beat for the day. Three golfers made a push to catch him, as Nicholas Smith Jr. of Apawamis, Andrew Hahn of Powelton and Liam Moloney of Mansion Ridge all finished one back at 2-under. CJ Antifonario of Knickerbocker led a group of five boys who moved on to White Beeches after shooting 8-over or better.

Monday, June 17 - Peddie Golf Club, East Windsor, N.J.
Alex Patel of Madison New Jersey dominated the day, carding an impressive -6 under par 72. He kicked off his round with an eagle on the first hole and proceeded to maneuver the course effortlessly, logging five birdies for the remainder of the day. Patrick Scenna of Manasquan, New Jersey closely followed posting a commendable -4 under par. Scenna’s remarkable birdie streak secured him a coveted spot among the tournament's top performers. Ethan Weinberg of Marlboro, New Jersey also clinched a notable finish by posting a solid -1 under par. In total, 13 players who finished even par or one over will advance to the next round.

Wednesday, June 19 - Smithtown Landing Golf Course, Smithtown, N.Y.
103rd Long Island Junior Championship

With temperatures nearing 90 degrees at Smithtown Landing Golf Course, Jiajun Wang of Old Westbury, N.Y. kept cool down the stretch to secure the top qualifying spot after shooting a 3-under 69. Wang moved up the leaderboard playing steady golf with two birdies on the front and two birdies on the back. Finishing just one shot back with the only other round under par was Leon Bui of the Bronx, New York with a 2-under 70. Overall, 11 golfers earned spots in the Junior Championship. Wang and Bui also topped the Boy’s qualifying positions.
