Gerbavsits takes early lead at the 100th Long Island Open | Day 1 Recap

Locust Valley N.Y.  (June 4, 2024) The 100th Long Island Open Presented by Stifel began on a beautiful day at Piping Rock Club. This is Piping Rock’s first time hosting the Long Island Open. The course was set up as a par 70 playing at 6700 yards.

Tyler Gerbavsits of Huntington Crescent Club set the pace this morning opening with a 65.  Gerbavsits who teed off in the second group of the day carded six birdies to just one bogey in his round, which included four consecutive birdies on holes 11 through 14. Sitting in a solo second place is Matthew Lowe of Bethpage State Park. Lowe carded a 4-under 66 in his opening round.  Lowe who has a pair of wins already this season, taking titles at the Richardson Memorial Championship and the Mittelmark Invitational.

Following Lowe is Andre Chi of Deepdale Golf Club who shot an opening 3-under 67. Rounding out the top of the leaderboard is a group of golfers who all finished at 2-under par. This includes James Hazen of St. George’s G & CC, Patrick Healy of Huntington Country Club and Josh German of Meadow Brook Club. German takes his return to Long Island after winning the 2023 Met Am at Friar’s Head.

Other notables include Jason Caron of Mill River Club who finished at 1-under par and is currently tied for seventh. Caron was our 2020 Long Island Open Champion. He comes into this event after recently tying for fourth in the Senior PGA Championship. Also tied for seventh is Danny Balin, a three-time Westchester Open Champion.  Our 2023 Met Open Champion Dylan Newman is firmly in  the mix after shooting a 2-under 68.

We have two former champions in the mix Bob Rittberger of Garden City GC our 2005 & 2002 Champion along with Matt Dobyns of Meadow Brook who is a two-time Long Island Open winner.

Tee times for round two begin at 7:30 am.
