Seniors and Super Seniors Advance to Tamarack

Redding, CT. (June 4, 2024) On a sunny day in Connecticut 15 men qualified for the 105th Westchester Amateur Championship. One man led all qualifiers. Jason Monroe of Fenway Golf Club shot 1-over after a calm, steady day of golf—no road bumps, smooth sailing ahead. Monroe recorded one birdie on the front nine and a birdie to close the show on 18 but parred almost every other hole. 14 to be exact. His day-high score came in at 72.

Scott Matthews of Hudson Hills Golf Course and Herrol Pryce of Baychester Golf Club shot 5-over at 76 to tie for the second qualifying distinction. Without two birdies within the first three holes, Pryce would have fallen out of the top two. A hot start on a hot summer day and Pryce was on his way to the 105th Westchester Amateur Championship. Edward McCan of Wykagyl Country Club, James Kienz of MGA eClub Hudson Valley and Gustove Talleur also of MGA eClub Hudson Valley rounded out a tie-extended top three.

There was no playoff, as three of the five playoff-qualifying golfers did not show up to what would have been a playoff. Tom Yellin of The Stanwich Club and Bart Weissman of Sterling Farms Mens Club earned the final two qualifying spots.

John Paul Newport of Spook Rock Mens Golf Club led all golfers within the Super Senior division. Newport carded a 40 on the front nine but hunkered down and held it down on the back nine. His improved back nine score of 37 made the division's top qualifying score 77 at 6-over. In ascending order, John Ireland of Silver Lake Men’s Golf Club, Drew Grabel of Rolling Hills Country Club and Jim Romaniello of Shorehaven Golf Club all qualified shooting 8,9 and 10-over for a 79, 80 and 81. Steven Hastings of the Powelton Club, Tom Fox of the Apawamis Club and Yale Stogel of Tamarack Country Club secured the last three qualifying spots, each shooting 11-over at 82.

The 105th Westchester Amateur Championship will be held at Tamarack Country Club in Greenwich, CT.,  from July 8th through the 10th.
