Qualifying: 109th Met Open Championship Presented By Callaway

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (July 19, 2024) -- The 109th Met Open Championship Presented by Callaway will make its first-ever appearance at Wee Burn Country Club in Darien, Conn., this year. This will be the second MGA major hosted by the club, having welcomed the Met Amateur in 1992. It's no stranger to big events, having also welcomed the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship on three occasions (1939, '58, '70). It last hosted an MGA championship in 2019, when Brad Tilley claimed the Mid-Amateur with a dramatic finish.

Recent Met Opens have served up exciting storylines and finishes of their own, from Dylan Newman's breakthrough victory at Arcola last year and Ryan Siegler's clutch finish at Bethpage Black in 2022 to Andy Svoboda winning his third career title in 2021 at Hudson National and Luke Sample becoming the youngest-ever champion and eighth amateur to win the title in 2020 at Mountain Ridge.

This year, six qualifiers will take place between July 22 and August 8 to complete the field at Wee Burn that will contend for the Walker L. Trammell Trophy.

Monday, July 22 - New Jersey National Golf Club, Basking Ridge, N.J.
In a thrilling display of skill and precision at the 109th Met Open Qualifier, competition was fierce as participating golfers vied for one of the nine coveted qualifying spots to advance to the championship. William O’Neill of Spring Brook Country Club was among the standouts, who carded an impressive 5-under par to top the leaderboard. Jack Maguire of Whippoorwill Club trailed closely behind with 4-under. Rounding out the podium were Bryan Dougherty of Hollywood Golf Club and Tanner Little of Fiddler's Elbow, both finishing at 2-under. Additionally, 11 golfers will move forward by finishing with even par. Their exceptional performances showcased the high level of talent on the course, as they navigated challenging fairways and greens with remarkable finesse. As the tournament concluded, these top qualifiers emerged from the pack, setting the stage for an exciting next round of competition.

Tuesday, July 23 - Manhattan Woods Golf Club, West Nyack, N.Y.
Andrew Stock of Ridgewood Country Club & Ryan Willingham of Sleepy Hollow Country Club topped a tight leaderboard. Both golfers recorded scores of 5-under par to earn co-medalist. In addition to being co-medalist Willingham was also the low amateur of the qualifier. Following Closely behind them was Matthew Yun of Wheatley Hills Golf Club and James O’Connor of Westchester Country Club. The leaderboard would stay tight after them as two more golfers would finish at three under par. On a day where there were 13 spots & ties up for grabs ten golfers would finish in a tie for thirteenth after recording a score of even par to advance. Overall there were 16 amateur’s who punched their tickets in the field.

Monday, July 29 - Silver Springs Country Club, Ridgefield, Conn.
Al Tenembaum of Manhattan Woods Golf Club lead the way at Silver Springs after firing a 6-under 65. Tenembaum recorded 8 birdies on the day. Claiming the second qualifying position was John Schob of Winged Foot Golf Club. Schob would finish shots back after recording a 4-under 67, which was good enough for a solo second place. Jacob Arva of MGA eClub Long Island, Eric Harstein of Country Club of Darien, Alex Elia of Silver Spring Country Club and Tony Demaria of Kennect Golf all finished at 3-under par with a 68.  Overall, 15 golfers earned spots in the Met Open.

Monday, July 29, Port Jefferson, Country Club, Port Jefferson, N.Y.
Shea Wolfe of Meadow Brook Club carded todays low round of 5-under 67 to secure his place at Wee Burn. 6 birdies throughout the round led him to the top of the leaderboard. Colin Summers, an amateur from Plainfield Country Club had a bogey free round to finish with a score of 4-under 68, placing him in solo second. Dino Capazario of Deepdale Golf Club, William Knauth of Inwood Country Club, John Mackie of Bellport Golf Club and Ethan Myers MGA eClub - Long Island, joined the list of qualifiers finishing 3-under 69. Overall, 16 golfers shot 1-under or better to punch their ticket to the Met Open.

Monday, August 5 - Laurel Links Country Club, Mattituck, N.Y.
Stephen Nicholas of Deepdale Golf Club led the field in today’s qualifier for the 109th Met Open, carding an impressive 4-under 67. Finishing his round with five birdies to secure the top spot.
Close behind, Clancy Waugh of Westhampton Country Club placed second by delivered a strong finish with three birdies on the back nine, concluding the day at 3-under 68. Five players tied for third place, each posting a score of 2-under 69. Connor Daly of Siwanoy Country Club, Ben Carpenter of Country Club of Darien, Tyler Gerbavsits of Huntington Crescent Club, Chris Gabriele of Quaker Ridge Golf Club, and Caleb Taylor of MGA eClub, New Jersey all securing their spots among the top qualifiers. In total, eleven players reached the cut line of 1-under 70 to advance to the championship at Wee Burn Country Club.

Tuesday, August 8 - Soldier Hill Golf Course, Emerson, N.J.
The final Met Open qualifier took place after being delayed several days due to heavy rain. Andres Acevedo of MGA eClub N.J. took home the medalist position after carding a 4-under 67. Acevedo had a busy day on the course recording six birdies. Finishing in a solo second place was Cole Ekert of Fairmount CC with a score of 3-under par. Rounding out the podium was Devlin Walsh of The Tuxedo Club, Jack Simon of Rockaway River CC and Johnny Bush of Plainfield CC all recorded scores of 2-under 69. Overall 11 golfers qualified including four amateurs.
