MGA to Fully Administer Women's Metropolitan Amateur Championship
ELMSFORD, N.Y. (February 6, 2024) – After partnering with the Women’s Metropolitan Golf Association (WMGA) on the Women’s Met Amateur Championship since 2012, the MGA will take on an enhanced leadership role and will administer and conduct the championship, with collaboration and support from the WMGA beginning in 2024.

The WMGA established the event in 2002 for competitive amateur women golfers in the Met Area, with the 18-hole championship taking place at some of the most historic and revered venues in the Met Area. Past winners include Nannette Hill, Megan Grehan, and past U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur champion Ina Kim-Schaad, whose three victories tie her with Laura Algiero for the most in the event’s history. With the championship now under its direction, the MGA aims to build on the event’s history and strengthen it for the future.
“The MGA will be focused on enhancing the championship in the coming years, including introducing a multi-round, multi-day format in 2025 that will make it eligible for World Amateur Golf Ranking points,” says MGA Championships Director Chris Gaffney.
The 22nd Women’s Met Amateur Championship, still contested over a single 18-hole round, will take place at Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove, N.Y., on June 18.
Acquiring the championship continues the MGA’s commitment to elevating and enhancing opportunities for women in golf at all levels. Recent years have seen the MGA change the structure of the Carey Cup Matches to include four women in the biennial matches against Golf Ireland; launch The Farrell, a high-level national invitational co-hosted with The Stanwich Club that features a women’s mid-amateur division; and in 2023 established the MGA Women’s Player of the Year Award.
The MGA will reveal its 2024 championship schedule with the third edition of the MGA Championship Preview Show Presented by Dewar’s, which will premiere at 7 p.m., on Tuesday, February 6 on the MGA’s YouTube channel. Gaffney and special guest host Shane Bacon will unveil the season ahead and take a deeper look at some of the biggest events on the calendar.
Championship registration opens on March 1 at 10 a.m., with all registration once again taking place through Golf Genius.
