Carey Cup Team Finalized
Elmsford, N.Y. (August 29, 2023) - The team has been finalized for the 17th edition of the Governor Hugh L. Carey Challenge Cup as Pendleton Bogache of Deepdale, Chris DeJohn of Arcola, Darin Goldstein of Deepdale, Kaitlyn Lee of Winged Foot, and Matt Lowe of Bethpage have been named to the MGA team.
These five competitors will join Christian Cavaliere of Hudson National, Mark Costanza of Baltusrol, Ina Kim-Schaad of Deepdale, Catherine McEvoy of Innis Arden, and Brad Tilley of Sleepy Hollow on the MGA team agaisnt Golf Ireland for the matches at Winged Foot, October 19 - 20.

Bogache, Lee, and Lowe are all newcomes to the MGA International Teams and will be competing in their first Carey Cup. Bogache, a former captain for the women's golf team at Georgetown, was the stroke-play medalist at the 2022 Farrell at Stanwich. Lee, a 2023 graduate of Yale where she was a top competitor for the Bulldogs and was an All-American Scholar, brings match play experience from competing in the 2023 U.S. Women's Amateur Four-Ball and 2022 Women's Amatuer championships. She is also a former club champion at Winged Foot. Lowe brings plenty of competitive experience to the team; he is the reigning MGA Public Links champion, 2022 Long Island Golf Association Player of the Year, and a former Ike and MGA Boys' champion.
DeJohn and Goldstein were members of the winning 2022 French-American Challenge team at Quaker Ridge where they both helped the Met Area team win the trophy for the first time since 1991. DeJohn, the 2021 MGA Mid-Amateur champion, has recorded a number of top-five finishes this season and won the Travis Invitational early in the season. This will be his first year competing in the Carey Cup. Goldstein is a veteran of the MGA International Matches; the 2018 MGA Player of the Year has played on seven past International Teams and this will be his fourth Carey Cup. This season he has earned wins in the Hochster Memorial and Havemeyer Invitational.
DeJohn and Goldstein both qualified for the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship and join Cavaliere, Costanza, and Tilley in the field (all three were exempt into the championship) at Sleepy Hollow and Fenway, September 9-14. On the women's side, Bogache, McEvoy, and Kim-Schaad will compete on the same dates in the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur at Stonewall Links in Elverson, Pa.
The 2023 squad will be captained by MGA President Patrick Donnelly and Greg Rohlf of Winged Foot, a ten-time international team competitor. Rohlf played on the MGA teams in the Carey Cup matches in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2007, and 2009 and the French-American Challenge matches in 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, and 2008. The final team members will be announced in the coming weeks.
The MGA has had success in recent Carey Cup matches, winning the cup at Arcola in 2019 (6.5 – 5.5) and then retaining the cup after a tie in 2021 at Carton House in Ireland (10-10).
The Carey Cup – which originated as the Metedeconk International Challenge Cup – was first played in 1990. The teams played once again in Ireland in 1992 but did not meet in 1994. In 1996, the matches were conducted again thanks to an effort spearheaded by the late Governor Hugh L. Carey, who envisioned the matches as an opportunity to foster sportsmanship and goodwill between the countries. Ever since, the matches have been played in his honor with a spirit of camaraderie and competition.
Golf Ireland was established in 2019 following an overwhelming endorsement by Ireland’s golf clubs. It became operational in January 2021, succeeding the Golfing Union of Ireland (GUI) and the Irish Ladies Golf Union (ILGU) to become the single governing body for golf in Ireland.
The event is scheduled to kickoff on Wednesday, October 18 with an "Am-Am," in which each of the MGA and Golf Ireland players will be paired with three amateurs in a best ball competition.
