The morning started slow for Prince, with Gallagher winning the first three holes. However, after tying holes four and five, he was able to quickly turn it around, winning 4 consecutive holes to wrap up the front nine.

Things started to heat up for Prince on hole eleven. Prince won that hole after an impressive long putt.

“That putt on eleven, I had a really good read on it. I was struggling the first ten holes actually. I missed a couple short putts, so to see that one go in, it was great. It kind of opened up the hole for me the rest of the day.”

Prince continued to pick up momentum, and wrapped up the first 18 holes 3 up. With 18 more holes ahead of him, Prince kept his mindset focused.

“It’s grueling, it really is. It’s mentally taxing, it’s physically taxing, you just really have to stay present and stay in the moment and just continue to walk and hit golf balls.”

The afternoon round was headlined by Prince’s impressive bunker shot on hole five, following Gallaghers win on hole four.

“My bounce back was pretty good today. I did that later in the second round as well, but that bunker shot was really, really good. Probably one of the best bunker shots I have hit in a long time. So to be able to get it right back, it not only feels good, but mentally is relieving at the same time.”

For much of the afternoon round, Prince held a significant lead, but was just within Gallagher's reach.

“It’s very easy to get ahead of yourself and think about the end and winning it all. I’m not gonna lie, I did think like that, but I told myself you have to stay in the moment and stay present like I said earlier. You just have to hit the golf shot in front of you, and that's what I tried to do.”

Although Gallagher won three holes on the back nine, Prince was able to hold his lead. A tie on hole 15 solidified Prince’s win.

“It’s very satisfying. After a long week, I get to go home and kick my feet up knowing I won, and that’s something no one can take away from me.”

This is the second time Prince will be getting his name on the Long Island Amateur Trophy. His first came in 2020, when he won at his home course of Huntington Crescent Club.

“It’s always great. It was great when I won it in 2020, and it’s still great in 2023… Especially being the 100th Anniversary, it means a little bit more.”
