Qualifying: 121st Met Amateur Championship

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (July 6, 2023) - With the 121st Met Amateur Championship quickly approaching, players will have the opportunity to clinch a spot for the event which is set to take place at Friar's Head in Riverhead, N.Y., August 3-6. Seven sites across the Met Area will host qualifiers from July 6 through July 23, with the top finishers advancing to the MGA's oldest championship. Those that qualify will complete two rounds of on-site qualifying, with the top 16 moving on to match play.

The Met Amateur is making its return to Friar's Head, which welcomed the championship in 2008 shortly after its opening. In addition to Tommy McDonagh winning that title, Cameron Young and Chris DeJohn have won MGA titles - the Ike and Mid-Am, respectively - at the Coore & Crenshaw layout that continues to climb in top-100 rankings. It ranks No. 15 in both Golf Digest's '23-'24 America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses and Golf's Top 100 Courses in the U.S.

July 6 - Manhattan Woods Golf Club, West Nyack, N.Y.
More than 120 players battled for five positions and ties to play in the Met Amateur Championship. The heat was a large factor in play, with past Carter Cup champion and MGA eClub - Hudson Valley member Bobby Diforio and reigning MGA Junior Player of the Year Tyler Lee of The Ridgewood Country Club carding 1-over73s to tie for first. Sean Shallot, Brian Lutz, Brandon Valvano, and Ryan Klarreich all punched their ticket to Friar’s Head with matching scores of 2-over 74. Notably, Klareich of qualifying host Manhattan Woods also qualified for the Met Junior while celebrating his 16th birthday Thursday. With only a few weeks left until the Met Amateur, players are excited and eager to take on Friar’s Head.

July 10 - North Fork Country Club, Cutchogue, N.Y.
Rain delays and high temperatures didn’t stop the low scores from rolling in at North Fork Country Club. Sam O’Hara of Maidstone Club finished in first, shooting 5 under par. Six birdies and one eagle secured him today's low score of 66. Scott Osler finished right below O’Hara, totalling 4-under 67 on his home course. A six-way tie for third place punched Jack Bori, Adam Fuchs, Daniel Abbondandolo, Will Rand, Matthew Yamin and Stephen Nicholas tickets to Friar’s Head. Overall, 8 players shooting 2-under or lower will advance to the 121st Met Amateur.

July 17 - Lawrence Yacht and Country Club, Lawrence, N.Y.
James McHugh of MGA eClub New Jersey came out on top of a strong field at Lawrence Yacht and Country Club. McHugh got off to a hot start with four birdies on the front nine and three more on the back to card a 5-under 65 for the day and take home medalist honors. Behind him Turner Foster of Maidstone logged a 3-under 67 which included six birdies. In solo third John Havay of High Bridge Hills carded a 2-under 68. Rounding out the qualifiers were Colin Dolph, Josh German, William Knauth and Jack woods who all shot 1-under for the day to punch their tickets to the 121st Met Amateur.

July 17 - Tamarack Country Club, Greenwich, Conn.
Hadley Ma of Meadow Brook and Jackson Fretty of Greenwhich CC finished in a tie for first with matching 5-under 65s at Tamarack Country Club. Strong back nines for both competitors propelled them to the top of the leaderboard for the day. Behind them Andrew Ossofsky of Huntington CC finished in a solo second after shooting 4-under. Thomas Bonomo of The Stanwich Club carded a 3-under 67. Ben Carpenter of Country Club of Darien, Jason Zubatkin of Hudson National, Jake Meskin of Sleepy Hollow CC and Ben Loomis of Winged Foot GC rounded out the qualifiers all shooting 68s for the day.

July 17 - Lake Mohawk Golf Club, Sparta Township, N.J.
With just four qualifying spots plus ties up for grabs it was Mac Bredahl of Fairmount Country Club who came on top. Bredahl earned medalist honors after carding a 4-under 66. It was a bogey free back nine which included four birdies that allowed him to seperate from the field. Behind him the field bunched with five players in a tie for second after all logging 2-under 68s to grab the final qualifying spots. Brandon Capone of Neshanic Valley GC, Erik Stauderman of Casperkill, Nick Taylor of MGA eClub NY, Andrew Kaskel of Montclair GC and Dustin Cook of Rolling Hills CC were the final qualifiers to punch their tickets.

July 18 - Watchung Valley Golf Club, Watchung, N.J.
The weather played a big role in Watchung N.J. as the players tried to qualify for the Met Amateur Championship. With severe rain at times throughout the day it was Edmund Broderick of Fiddlers Elbow who came out as top qualifer finishing 3-under par with a 69. It was four birdies on the front nine that secured him the top qualifing posistion. He was followed by a four-way tie for second place at 2-under par. Andrew Watson of USGA/MGA GC, Bryan Kordupel of knickerbocker CC, Jack Casler of Garden City CC and Thomas Lee of Hudson national were all able to punch their tickets to the 121st Met Amateur.

July 23 - Rock Spring Golf Club, West Orange, N.J.
With 3 spots up for grabs in the final Met Amateur Championship qualifier it was Liam Pasternak of Essex Fells Country Club who topped the leaderboard after firing off an impressive 8-under 62.  Pasternak got off to a hot start with a birdie on the first to fire a 3 under 34 on the front 9. The great play got better on the back 9 after adding 4 birdies and an eagle on the first 6 holes to finish 5-under on the back. It was Patrick Ryan of Essex Fells Country Club who took home the second qualifying spot with a solo second place finish. Ryan fired a bogey free round shooting 1-under on the front and 4-under on the back to finish with a 65. The final two spots were claimed by Reed Greyserman of Hamilton Farms Golf Club and Daniel Cassidy of Trump National Colts Neck. Both golfers shot a 4-under 66 to punch their tickets to the Championship.
