Seven Locals Make U.S. Junior Amateur
ELMSFORD, N.Y. (July 3, 2013) - The Met Area will be well represented when the U.S. Junior Amateur kicks off on July 22 at Martis Camp Club in Truckee, Calif. Six talented MGA competitors recently qualified (and one was exempt) for the championship and will compete against the best juniors in the country.
Here they are:
Will Bernstein of New York, N.Y. - The 17-year-old finished 2nd at the Springdale SQR with two impressive rounds of 70 (2-under). Bernstein, who was the runner-up at last year's Met Junior, also qualified for the Ike this year and finished T14 at the U.S. Open LQR at Willow Ridge.
Jacob Henny of Norwalk, Conn. - Another 17-year-old with a lot of promise, Henny just won the 66th MGA MetLife Public Links Championship. He finished 3rd at the Springdale SQR to qualify for his first U.S. Junior. Henny is a graduate of The First Tee of Fairchild Wheeler where he honed his game. He's also the two-time reigning boys champion of the Fran McCarthy Memorial Tournament held annually at Richter Park (site of this year's MGA/MetLife Public Links).

Theo Humphrey of Greenwich, Conn. - The 17-year-old earned co-medalist honors at the SQR at Fairview CC (where the Met Junior will be played). Humphrey, a member of the victorious 2012 Williamson Cup team who plays out of Sleepy Hollow, won the 2011 MGA/MetLife Boys Championship and finished T2 at last year's Carter Cup. He'll play his college golf at Vanderbilt University starting in the fall of 2014.
Cameron Young of Scarborough, N.Y. - Despite fighting a shoulder injury all season, the uber-talented 15-year-old qualified for this second consecutive U.S. Junior by finishing T4 (he won a playoff) at Fairview. Young qualified for match play a year ago at the U.S. Junior and also played in the final group at the Met Open with Ryan McCormick last August. Like Theo, he was also a member of the victorious Williamson Cup team (earned medalist honors with two outstanding 66s) and plays out of Sleepy Hollow CC (where the Williamson Cup will be held on August 15).
Jeremy Wall of Brielle, N.J. - The 17-year-old qualified for his second U.S. Junior after finishing third at the Telford, Pa. sectional (147). Wall, a very accomplished high school player at Christian Brothers Academy, finished as a semifinalist in last year's Met Junior.
In addition, Jim Liu of Smithtown, N.Y. will also be competing in his fourth consecutive U.S. Junior. He won the championship in 2010 (becoming the youngest player ever to do so at 14) and finished runner-up in 2012, earning him an exemption this year. Most recently, Liu was a semifinalist at the prestigious British Amateur Championship. He's headed to Stanford University in the fall.
