Eight Players Qualify for 111th Met Amateur
NEW CITY, N.Y. (July 1, 2013) – The first day of July brought steady rain to Paramount Country Club in New City, N.Y., as 144 players competed for only six spots (plus ties) into the prestigious 111th Met Amateur Championship, which will be held in August 1-4 at the Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Conn.
Mother Nature played defense for the 6,655 yard par-70 layout, with rain covering the grounds for most of the day as none of the eight qualifiers were able to finish under par.
Bongjun Derrick Kim of Rolling Green, who won the Brae Burn Invitational in June, and Dominic Schiavone of MGA eClub – N.J. weathered the storm better than everyone, as the two split medalist honors with 1-over rounds of 71.
Max Christiana of Westchester, who captured the Anderson Memorial last month with Max Buckley, 2012 Met Junior champ Scott Kim of MGA eClub – N.J., and Trevor Randolph of Arcola all tied for third with two-over rounds of 72.
Luke Edelman of North Jersey and Dylan Newman of Bonnie Briar tied for sixth with three-over rounds of 73. Hal Berman of Woodmere also tied for third, birdieing the 195 yard par-3 18th to make the field.
This was the first of five sectional qualifiers the MGA will conduct to determine the championship field for Stanwich. The Met Amateur is open to all amateurs who belong to a Met Area club and have a Handicap Index not exceeding 5.0.
