Leslie A. Schupak Elected 58th President Of The MGA

Rye, N.Y. (December 7, 2006) - Leslie A. Schupakof Metropolis Country Club was elected to a one-year term as President of the Metropolitan Golf Association at the Association’s 109th Annual Meeting on Wednesday, December 6, at the Westchester Country Club in Rye, N.Y.  Mr. Schupak is the Association’s 58th President and will head a 22-member Executive Committee as well as serve as Chairman of the Association’s charitable Foundation.

Mr. Schupak has been an active MGA committeeman since 1994, serving as the Association’s Secretary/Treasurer and Vice-President before his election as President.  He has also been a member of the MGA Public Information, The Met Golfer Advisory and Distinguished Service Award Committees.  In addition, he has served as the chairman of the Editorial Committee of The Met Golfer, the Association’s widely acclaimed bi-monthly magazine.

Mr. Schupak is a Managing Partner at KCSA Worldwide, a public and investor relations consulting firm.  He received his B.A. (1967) and M.S. (1971) from Boston University and serves as Chairman of the Dean’s Advisory Board for the College of Communications at B.U.  He lives in Chappaqua, N.Y., with his wife Dianne; the couple has one son, Adam, a writer for Golfweek magazine.  He has been active member at Metropolis Country Club and serves on the USGA Communications Committee.

“The MGA has made great strides since I have been involved thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers and a highly talented professional staff and I hope to contribute to that,” said Mr. Schupak.  “I will look to improve the organization’s Web site, office facilities and to complete the MGA Foundation Capital Campaign as I begin my tenure as President.” 

Also elected at the Annual Meeting were Vice-President Allan W. Small of Fairmount Country Club, an accomplished golfer in the Met Area, Gene M. Bernstein of Sebonack Golf Club as Secretary and Jeffrey R. Holzschuh of the Stanwich Club as Treasurer.

Mr. Schupak will succeed Donald J. Hendler of the Meadow Brook Club, who served two successful terms as the Association’s 57th President.

“Don had an outstanding two years as President,” said Mr. Schupak.  “He led the organization with a strong hand and a deep commitment.”

The MGA’s 22-member Executive Committee includes four newly elected members, Philip T. Fabrizio of Knickerbocker Country Club, Brian C. Leftwich of Deepdale Golf Club, Tod D. Pike of the Apawamis Club and Douglas Vergith of St. George’s Golf and Country Club.  They replace J. Douglas Casey of the Apawamis Club, Joseph Jerkovich of Raritan Valley Country Club and Lucius J. Riccio of the Nassau Players Club, all of whom leave the executive Committee after nine years of service.  Also joining the Committee as special members are Robert J. Capazzi of the Muttontown Club as President of the Long Island Golf Association and Kathy Dennis of St. George’s G & CC as President of the Women’s Metropolitan Golf Association.

Over 250 club delegates, MGA committeemen, members of the press and representatives of the local and national golf communities attended the Annual Meeting.  The highlights of the meeting were the presentations of the Association’s highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award, to former MGA President Joseph C. Cantwell of Hempstead Golf and Country Club and the Jerry Courville Sr. MGA Player of the Year Award to Andrew Giuliani of Van Cortlandt Park Golf Course.

The MGA was founded in 1897 and is one of the nation’s oldest and largest regional golf associations, with 516 member clubs in the tri-state Metropolitan Area.  A complete list of the 2007 Executive Committee and Officers is attached.
