ELMSFORD, N.Y. (August 29, 2006) - In addition to the tremendous success this season of J.J. Henry on the PGA Tour and Johnson Wagner on the Nationwide, some other Met Area players have left their mark in events around the world.  Former Met Amateur and Ike champion John Baldwin of the Meadow Brook Club finished tied for second in the British Senior Amateur Championship on August 11th.  Playing at Saunton Golf Club in Saunton, England, Baldwin followed a first-round 80 with rounds of 73 and 75 over the par-71 course. Baldwin, who won this event in 2002, finished with a three-round total of 228 and five strokes behind champion Paul Stimson.

On the LPGA Tour, Diana D’Alessio of Dover, N.J., finished tied for fifth at the Wendy’s Championship for Children at Tartan Fields Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.  In her best showing of the season, D’Alessio had four rounds in the 60s and finished nine strokes behind champion Lorena Ochoa.  D’Alessio earned $45,594 for her fifth place finish and jumped to 78th on the LPGA Tour’s ADT Money List with $100,022.

In the men’s professional ranks, former Met Open and Met Amateur champion Andrew Svoboda of Winged Foot finished second at the New England Pro Golf Tour’s Wintonbury Hills Open at Wintonbury Golf Club in Bloomfield, Conn.  Svoboda shot even-par 70 in the first round, but fired an eight-under-par course record 62 in the second

round of the rain shortened event.  Svoboda’s 62 gave him the lead in the final round until eventual champion Geoffrey Sisk went eagle-birdie on the final two holes to also finish at nine-under and force a playoff.  In what was the longest playoff on the tour’s six-year history, both players made par on the first nine sudden-death playoff holes.  On the 10th playoff hole, the par-four 18th, Svoboda missed his birdie attempt, while Sisk drained his four-footer to win the championship and the $16,500 first prize. Svoboda earned $10,000 for his second place finish.  Other Met Area pros in the field included Charles Meola of Fairway Golf Center (4th), Anthony Aruta of Bayonne (t-5th), Chris Damiano of Westchester Hills (t-15th) and Nick Cook of Mill River in Connecticut (t-21st).

On the Grey Goose Gateway Tour, Marc Turnesa of Rockville Links, finished second in the Beach Summer Series event at the Martin Downs Country Club in Palm City, Fla. Turnesa had a final round 69, but lost in a playoff to champion Del Ponchock.  Turnesa earned $9,367 for his second-place finish and moved up to ninth on that tour’s money list with $36,722.29.  Brad Tilley of Sleepy Hollow, who won the 2003 Ike Championship, was also in the field and earned $5,455 for his 5th place finish.
