MGA “Day of Golf” Highlights Success of Intern Program
WEST CALDWELL, N.J. (May 7, 2007) - The MGA Foundation’s 13th Annual “Day of Golf” was held on Monday at Mountain Ridge Country Club in West Caldwell, N.J., where more than 100 players turned out to support the Foundation’s GOLFWORKS intern program. The Day of Golf provides another opportunity for the golf community to support the MGA Foundation’s mission to grow the game.
The Day of Golf is an annual fundraiser helping to support more than 225 internships at 90 Met Area clubs each year. The Donald Ross-designed Mountain Ridge CC, host of three Met Opens and two Met Amateurs, drew rave reviews from the players and perfect spring weather made it an ideal day. Thanks to the generosity of Mountain Ridge, nearly all of the $100,000 generated by this event will go directly to the program.
“Day of Golf” Chairman George Zahringer led a brief program following golf, which was highlighted by the attendance of several current and former GOLFWORKS interns who shared their thoughts on the impact GOLFWORKS has had on their lives. These included Hermen “Trapper” Van Dunk (Class of ’95), now the head golf course superintendent at Leewood Golf Club in Eastchester, N.Y., Jason Hooper, (Class of 2000) from at Arcola CC and studying to be a civil engineer, and Kingsley Bayoh, (Class of 2002) formerly of the Forest Hill Field Club in N.J., and now a golf professional. Van Dunk, who interned at The Tuxedo Club in Tuxedo, NY, earned a degree in Turfgrass Management from Penn State in 2000 and was also featured in the April may issue of The Met Golfer Magazine.
This year marked the 13th annual Day of Golf outing in support of GOLFWORKS. The GOLFWORKS program was created in 1994 with 12 students working at six clubs and has grown to 230 students working at more than 90 clubs. The Day of Golf has been held at some of the top golf courses in the Met Area and continues to be a popular way to raise awareness of the GOLFWORKS program. Past hosts include Trump National - Bedminster in Bedminster, N.J., Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y., in 2005 and Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J., in 2002.
