New Jersey Legend Babe Lichardus Dies at 81
ELMSFORD, N.Y. (June 4, 2007) – One of the most prominent players in New Jersey golf history, Milton “Babe” Lichardus, died of cancer on May 25 at the age of 81. In a professional career that spanned more than 50 years, Lichardus compiled one of the greatest playing records of any New Jersey club professional. He won four New Jersey State Open titles, the first in 1952, and five NJPGA Section Championships, the last in 1978. He was twice named NJPGA Player of the Decade (1950s and ‘60s).
Lichardus, a native of West Caldwell, served as an assistant professional at numerous Garden State clubs, and was the head professional at Shackamaxon Country Club as well as Grossinger’s Country Club in the Catskills.
The “Babe,” as he was known, was one of golf’s true characters – a free spirit with a renowned sense of humor. MGA Executive Director Jay Mottola said of Lichardus, “He was a wonderful personality with a great sense of humor, and anyone who saw him hit a golf ball knows that he was one of the best players ever to compete in the area.”
Donations in his memory can be made to the New Jersey Golf Foundation, the charitable arm of the NJPGA. The Foundation can be reached at 732-465-1212.
