Met Area Golfers Make their Mark at the 4th USGA Men's & Women's State Team Championship
Minnesota--Although both the men’s and women’s home teams from the state of Minnesota won the their respective 2001 USGA State Team Championship, a host of Met Area golfers made strong showings both in the team and individual competition.
A total of 52 teams, representing all the U.S. states as well as Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, made up of three players from each state competed at two-time U.S. Open venue Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, MN. New Jersey’s team of Michael Hyland, of Marlton, NJ (76-73-71), Allan Small, of Florham Park, NJ (72-83-69), and Michael Deo, of Milford, NJ (79-75-78) combined to shoot a three day total of 436 (148-148-140) to finish in a tie for fourth. Connecticut finished in a tie for 17th while New York finished in a tie for 36th.
In the individual competition, 1995 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Jerry Courville, Jr. of Milford, CT finished in a tie for 5th after finishing at two-over par 218 (72-79-67). New Jersey’s Hyland finished in a tie for 13th at 220 (76-73-71).
The women’s championship was held concurrently at nearby Woodhill Country Club in Wayzatz, MN, with a total of 44 teams competing. Connecticut’s team of Elizabeth Janangelo (77-75-76), Renata Fajger (85-83-77) and Lida Tingley (82-87-87) finished in a tie for sixth, while Janangelo finished tied for fourth in the individual competition. New Jersey’s team, led by Sherry Herman (76-80-70) who finished second in the individual portion, finished in a tie for 18th while New York’s team finished 36th.
