Only Rohlf , Courville, Wagner & Skirkanich Remain In the 99th Met Amateur Championship
Croton-On-Hudson, N.Y.--After two grueling days of championship golf at Hudson National Golf Club, only four players remain in search of the 99th Met Amateur Championship. Former champions Greg Rohlf (1999) and Jerry Courville Jr. (1995, '97, '98) will be joined in the semifinals by young standouts Johnson Wagner and Jack Skirkanich. Rohlf, of Wykagyl CC, needed only 14-holes to defeat recent U.S. Public Links semi-finalist Adam Fuchs of Hamlet GC after Fuchs defeated Matt Finger of Bergen Community in the morning round. After playing a light schedule over the last few years, Rohlf returned to the dominant form he showed in winning the championship in 1999. "I'm excited about being back in this position again. To come back and win this again after spending a lot of time in the office over the last few years would be something," the 36-year old said afterwards.
With a combined eight Met Amateur trophies between them, the days most anticipated match was between veterans Courville and George Zahringer III of Deepdale. Courville, the 1995 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion from Shorehaven GC, played steady golf all day and prevailed 2 & 1 over the Zahringer, the 2001 Ike Champion. Courville breezed thru his morning match against former MGA Junior champion Taylor Walsh of Nevele Grande, winning 6 & 4 while Zahringer was taken to the 18-hole by 2001 MGA/MetLife Public Links champion Martin Catalioto of Bergen Community, but prevailed 1 up.
Yesterday's stroke play medalist, 21-year old Johnson Wagner of Garrison GC, continued his success but needed 19 holes to defeat 2001 U.S. Public Links semi-finalist Mark Farrell of H. Smith Richardson. "I was fortunate to win both of my matches today. I didn't play quite as well as I did yesterday, but I'm excited and ready for my match with Courville tomorrow," the long-hitting senior to be at Virgina Tech and caddie at Hudson National said afterward. Wagner defeated Thomas Yellin of Stanwich 2 up in the morning while Farrell defeated Tim Connors of Westchester CC 4 &3 to advance to the quarterfinals.
The fourth semifinalist, 2000 MGA Junior semi-finalist Jack Skirkanich of Rumson CC, continued his fine play by defeating four-time Met Amateur semifinalist Jon Doppelt Fresh Meadow, 2 up in the quarterfinals. Skirkanich's confidence showed in the afternoon after he defeated 2001 Ike runner-up Andrew Svoboda of Winged, 2 up in the morning. Doppelt advanced to the quarters after beating 2000 Nassau Invitational champion Austin Eaton of Sterling Farms, 20 holes. Skirkanich will next meet Rohlf in the semifinals.
Tomorrow's 18-hole semi-final matches will start at 12:30 and conclude with a 36-hole final at 7:30 on Sunday.
